S. Korea to keep helping Syrian, Iraqi refugees: FM Yun

Sept. 30, 2015 - 16:14 By KH디지털2

Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se has assured the Arab League that his government will continue to provide humanitarian aid for Syrian and Iraqi refugees, his ministry said Wednesday.

He made the pledge in a meeting with the pan-Arab group's secretary general Nabil al-Arabi on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York Tuesday (local time).

The two sides agreed on the need for the international community's constant assistance in dealing effectively with extremist terrorism forces, such as ISIL, and coping with the humanitarian crisis stemming from civil conflicts in the region.

"Minister Yun explained that South Korea has offered a total of $27 million since 2011 to aid Syrian and Iraqi refugees," it said. "He said the government will continue its assistance."

Yun also told the Arab League chief that North Korea's nuclear and missile programs pose a serious threat to the world.

He expressed concern about the possibility of Pyongyang firing a long-range rocket in violation of U.N. resolutions in early October.

In separate talks with his Iraqi counterpart Ibrahim al-Jaafari in the U.S. city, Yun said South Korea can be a "natural partner" in the Mideast country's reconstruction work.

The Iraqi minister requested "active assistance" from South Korea for local refugees, whose number is on the steep rise.

Yun also held a series of bilateral meetings with his counterparts from several other nations, including the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Albania, Mexico, and Britain.

The minister briefed them on South Korea's efforts to prevent North Korea from taking additional provocative acts and resolve the nuclear issue.

"In most of the talks, Yun and his counterparts discussed regional security and bilateral issues, including trade," a ministry official said. (Yonhap)
