The number of kids with stock holdings exceeding 100 million won (US$88,400) exceeded the 100 mark for the first time in April as owners of large businesses take steps to pass on their wealth to their children, data showed Friday.
According to the data compiled by Chaebol.com, an information provider on large conglomerates, 102 children under 12 held sizable shares in listed companies as of the end of April, up from 87 kids a year earlier.
The research firm said the increase was brought on by a drop in the local bourse this year that made it cheaper to turn over shares to kids. Lower stock prices translate into less gift tax.
Almost all transfer of stocks involved children or grandchildren of the owners of South Korea's chaebol or large family-run conglomerates.
Of the kids checked, the richest in terms of value of shares held was the eldest son of GS Group executive vice president Huh Yong-su, whose shares were worth 45.3 billion won.
His younger brother had shares worth 16.3 billion won placing him third on the list.
Chaebol.com said there were instances where one-year olds had shares valued at up to 900 million won.
The data provider said there has been a steady rise in young people owning large amounts of stocks in recent years. Such measures can make it easier for these children to take over companies run by their parents down the road. (Yonhap News)

특히 태어난지 1년밖에 안된 갓난 아기가 9억원의 주식을 갖고 있는 것으로 확인됐다.
4일 재벌닷컴에 따르면 상장사 대주주 및 특수관계인이 보유한 주식지분 가치를 지난 4월30일 종가기준으로 조사한 결과 1억원 이상을 보유한 만 12세이하 어린이는 102명으로 집계됐다.
이는 지난해 87명보다 15명이 늘어난 것이다.
올해 어린이 주식부자가 급증한 것은 지난해 유럽발 금융위기로 주식시장이 폭락한 틈을 이용해 증여가 이뤄졌기 때문이라고 재벌닷컴은 설명했다.
허용수 (주)GS 전무의 장남(11)과 차남(8)이 각각 453억원과 163억원으 로 각각 1위와 3위를 차지했다.
허 전무의 장남은 3세였던 2004년에 증여받은 GS주식 25만9천여주가 현재는 76만341주로 늘었다. 허 전무의 차남도 5세때인 2009년에 GS주식 27만3천주를 증여받아 매년 2억∼3억원의 배당금을 받고 있다.
또 허태수 GS홈쇼핑 사장의 딸(12)은 170억원으로 2위를 차지했다.
박상돈 예신그룹 회장의 딸(9)이 47억원, 구본천 LB인베스트먼트 사장 아들(11) 이 36억원, 정호 화신 회장 손녀(12)가 27억원 등으로 4∼7위를 차지했다.
정상돈 한국철강 회장 손자(12)가 22억원, 권철현 세명전기 대 표이사의 차남(12)이 20억원, 정우연 미스터피자 회장의 손녀(18)가 18억원 등으로 10위안에 들었다.
최창영 고려아연 명예회장의 손자(7) 17억원, 전필립 파라다이스그룹 회장 아들(8) 16억원, 김정 삼양사 사장 아들(12) 13억원 등으로 10억원을 넘었다.
5세 이하의 어린이가 수억원대의 주식을 증여받은 사례도 많았다.
구자홍 LS그룹 회장의 친인척인 이 모 군은 태어난지 1년밖에 안된 젖먹이 나이 에 (주)LS주식 1만2천여주를 증여받아 9억원대 주식 갑부가 됐다. 김상헌 동서회장의 친인척인 김 모 군도 올해 두 살의 나이에 3억원대의 주식을 갖고 있다.
최창근 고려아연 회장의 친인척인 최 모 군과 이화일 조선내화 회장의 손자인 이모 군은 각각 3세의 나이에 7억원과 5억원대의 부자가 됐다.
정선섭 재벌닷컴 대표는 "갈수록 저연령대 주식부자들이 늘어나고 있다"면서 "이런 주식 증여는 불법은 아니지만 편법에 해당된다"고 말했다.
