속담으로 배우는 영어공부(3)

1. Don’t cast pearls before swine.(돼지에게 진주를 던지지 마라)

의미: Don’t offer something valuable to someone who doesn’t value it.(그 가치를 모르는 사람에게 가치있는 것을 주지마라) - 성경말씀

(ex) To serve them French cuisine is like casting pearls before swine.(그들에게 프랑스 요리를 대접하는 것은 돼지에게 진주를 던지는 것과 같다)

* cuisine: 요리(법), 주로 고급요리, cast: 던지다, pearl: 진주, swine: 돼지

2.. Don’t cross a bridge until you come to it.(다리에 도달하고 나서 다리를 건너라)

의미: Deal with a situation when it happens and not unnecessarily worry about it in advance.(일이 벌어질 때 그 상황을 처리하면 된다. 미리 불필요하게 걱정하지 마라)

(ex): I know you’re worried about the mortgage payment in January, but don’t cross the bridge till you come to it.(나는 네가 1월에 있을 주택 장기 융자 지불에 대해 걱정하는 것을 안다. 그건 그 때 가서 걱정해라)

3. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.(모든 계란을 한 바구니에 두지 마라)

의미: Don’t put all your effort into a single course of action, venture, investment, goal, or the like, because if it doesn’t work, you lose everything.(모든 당신의 노력을 한가지 행동, 사업, 목표등에 다 집중하지 마라. 그 것이 효과가 없으면 다 잃게 되기 때문이다)

(ex)  Almost entire revenue of the Company comes from the Facebook platform. They shouldn’t put all their eggs in the same basket.(그 회사의 거의 모든 돈은 페이스북 플랫폼에서 나온다. 그들은 모든 계란을 한 바구니에 둬서는 안된다)

4. Every cloud has a silver lining.(모든 구름에는 가는 은빛 햇살이 있다)

의미: Every bad or negative situation can result in some benefit to you.(모든 나쁘거나 부정적인 상황은 당신에게 어떤 형태로건 유익한 결과를 낳을 수 있다)

(ex) I know your business has suffered few setbacks this season. But remember, every cloud has a silver lining.(나는 너의 사업이 이번 시즌에 몇가지 장애를 겪고 있는 것을 안다. 그러나 기억해라 모든 구름에는 은빛 햇살이 숨어 있다)

If there's a silver lining to losing my job, it's that I'll now be able to go to school full-time and finish my degree earlier.(내가 실직하는 것에도 희망적인 면이 있다. 이제 나는 학교를 풀타임으로 다닐 수 있고 학위를 더 일찍 끝낼 수 있게 된다)

* silver lining : 구름속에 가려진 햇살로 희망적인 전망(hopeful prospect)을 의미한다.

5. Every dog has his day.(모든 개는 다 그 전성기가 있다)

의미: Even the unluckiest or the most unfortunate will taste success at some point.(가장 운이 나쁜 사람도 어느 시점에 성공을 맛보게 된다) - 쥐구멍에도 볕 뜰날이 있다.

(ex) Are you surprised that John has got 100 percent marks in math? Well, every dog has his day.(,John이 100점 받아서 놀랐니? 지구멍에도 볕뜰날이 있는거다)

6. Fall seven times. Stand up eight.(7전8기[七顚八起])

의미: Be resilient and try despite failures. That’s how you succeed.(실패해도 탄력성을 가지고 다시 해봐라. 그게 성공의 방법이다)

(ex) Abraham Lincoln lost so many elections, but he kept trying. Eventually he became the President of United States. It’s rightly said: Fall seven times. Stand up eight.(아브라함 링컨은 너무나 많은 선거에서 졌다 그러나 그는 계속 시도했고 결국 미국의 대통령이 되었다. 이럴 때 7전8기[七顚八起]라고 쓰는 거다.
