Netizens urge end to age limit on Psy’s ‘Right Now’

Sept. 20, 2012 - 22:08 By Korea Herald
A South Korean Internet user has filed an online petition citing the need to lift a strict age restriction on another song by the country’s rapper-singer who became a YouTube sensation for his latest hit single “Gangnam Style.”

The netizen filed the petition on the “Agora” bulletin board of the local Internet portal Daum on Sunday with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, and has since collected signatures from 300 supporters until Thursday, according to the portal.

Boosted by the explosive popularity of his latest hit single “Gangnam Style,” the music video of “Right Now,” a 2010 hit song by Psy, has also gained much attention on YouTube, drawing 4.2 million views.

However, access to the video is limited for minors as the ministry in charge of protecting youth labeled it harmful to them for containing vulgar language in its lyrics.

The petitioner argued that the video of “Right Now” faces difficulty in attracting more views due to the “adult-only” rating voluntarily granted by Psy’s side in line with the government designation.

The ministry should rescind the “too strict” age restriction on the song to help the singer retain his fame outside the country, the netizen said.

“The latest U.S. TV show featuring Psy was mostly about Gangnam Style, but ‘Right Now’ was also played a few times during the show.

Some foreigners say they prefer this song to ‘Gangnam Style,’” the petitioner said. (Yonhap News)
