Mercedes-Benz to recall 555 S63 AMG sedans for ignition problem

Nov. 15, 2015 - 11:14 By KH디지털2

Germany luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz will recall 555 S63 AMG 4Matic sedans for ignition-related problems, the government said Sunday.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said cars made between May 13, 2013 and Sept. 18, 2015 will be recalled from December onwards.

It said the cars have been found to have a glitch in the electronic control unit program that sometimes keeps fuel from flowing to the engine when the vehicle slows down. The drop in fuel can cause the ignition to turn off, which can cause safety problems.

ECU is a key computer system that collects data from various sensors located on the car and controls how the car operates.

Related to the recall, the ministry said it has already ordered the Korea Transportation Safety Authority to check the cause of the problem. It said the probe is still ongoing.

The S63 problem caused a public fervor when a frustrated driver publicly smashed his 200 million-won ($171,700) S63 with a baseball bat and a golf club in Gwangju, a city about 330 kilometers south of Seoul, in September.

The ministry said that after the incident generated public interest and the government started a probe, the German luxury carmaker has moved to recall the same vehicles in other countries such as the United States and Canada. (Yonhap)
