지난 주에 이어 우리 일상의 대화를 좀 더 세련되게 만들 수 있는 표현들을 보겠습니다. 저희 책 『나는 더 영어답게 말하고 싶다 일상회화 편 2』에서 뽑은 표현들입니다.
<판단, 판단의 근거를 말할 때>

A What’s the common denominator of the group? How are you so united?
B We faced adversity together while volunteering in Africa and shared difficult moments.
A 이 그룹이 공유하는 점이 뭐예요? 어떻게 그렇게 단결할 수 있죠?
B 아프리카에서 봉사 활동을 하면서 역경을 함께 했고 힘든 시간을 같이 보냈습니다.
SITUATION 공유하는 점을 말할 때
평범하게 What brought them together was their love for music.
영어답게 The common denominator was their love for music.
수학에서 분모를 denominator, 분자를 numerator라고 합니다. 분수끼리 계산을 하려면 통분을 위한 공통분모를 찾아야 하는데, ‘공통분모’가 common denominator입니다. 비유적으로 구성원이 공유하는 생각이나 경험을 일컫죠.

A If I just connect the dots, I think he is not interested in doing business with us.
B I agree. Let’s just give it one more try and give up. We don’t need to waste our time.
A 추정을 해 보면 그는 우리와 사업을 하는 데 별 관심이 없는 것 같아.
B 동의해. 한 번 더 시도해 보고 포기하자. 시간 낭비할 필요는 없잖아.
SITUATION 증거들을 모아 추정한다고 할 때
평범하게 If you put together pieces of information, you’ll learn who did it.
영어답게 If you connect the dots, you’ll learn who did it.
connect the dots는 ‘점선 따라 그리기’를 생각하면 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 표현입니다. 점선을 따라 그리면 전체적인 모습이 완성되듯이, 흩어진 정보를 연결하면서 결론을 추정해 나가는 과정을 connect the dots라고 표현합니다.

A As a rule of thumb, the amount of sugar I put in when baking cupcakes is one tenth of the weight of the flour.

A 컵케이크를 만들 때 설탕을 밀가루 무게의 10분의 1 정도 넣으면 얼추 맞더라고.
B 기억하기 쉽네.
SITUATION 어림잡아 계산한다고 할 때
평범하게 A practical rule is to save 15 percent of your income for retirement.
영어답게 A good rule of thumb is to save 15 percent of your income for retirement.
rule of thumb은 정교하지 않지만 얼추 잘 맞기 때문에 유용한 원칙을 말합니다. ‘대체적으로 이렇게 하면 잘 맞더라’라고 할 때 활용하면 됩니다.

A Education level and crime rate have an inverse correlation.
B Possibly. But it’s not always the case.
A 교육 수준과 범죄율 간에는 역의 상관 관계가 있어.
B 그럴 수도 있지. 하지만 항상 그런 건 아니야.
SITUATION 역의 상관관계가 있다고 할 때
평범하게 Prices of oil and dollar move in the opposite direction.
영어답게 Prices of oil and dollar have an inverse correlation.
correlation은 ‘상관관계’를 뜻합니다. 역의 상관관계는 inverse/negative correlation, 정의 상관관계는 positive correlation이라고 합니다.
<논쟁, 주장, 설득에 대해 말할 때>

A The actor has become increasingly vocal about immigrant issues.
B It sounds like he’s stepping his foot in politics.
A 그 배우는 이민 문제에 대해 점점 큰 목소리를 내고 있어.
B 정치에 발을 들이려는 것 같아.
SITUATION 강한 주장을 펼친다고 할 때
평범하게 He has strongly expressed his opinion in criticizing the current government.
영어답게 He has been very vocal in criticizing the current government.
voice의 형용사형 vocal은 ‘자기 주장을 강하게 하는’이라는 뜻도 지닙니다. 그래서 침묵하는 다수를 silent majority, 목소리가 큰 소수를 vocal minority라고 표현합니다. 어떤 사람이 vocal하다고 하면 사회 문제에 대해 자신의 생각을 강하게 피력한다는 뜻입니다. 비슷한 단어에 outspoken도 있습니다. 목소리를 높여 주장한다는 뜻을 지닌 speak out에서 나온 형용사로, 자기 주장을 강하게 펼치는 사람을 일컫습니다.

B Even with all this scientific evidence, there will be people who still believe in the conspiracy theory.
A 그 다큐멘터리는 달착륙 음모설을 효과적으로 반박하고 있어.
B 과학적인 증거가 드러나도 계속 음모론을 믿는 사람들이 있을 거야.
SITUATION 헛된 주장을 반박한다고 할 때
평범하게 It was his mission to prove that the JFK conspiracy theory was wrong.
영어답게 It was his mission to debunk the JFK conspiracy theory.
주장이나 믿음의 허구성을 밝히는 것을 debunk라고 합니다. theory(이론), myth(잘못된 믿음), claim(주장) 등과 함께 잘 쓰이죠. 위 예문에서 moon landing hoax는 실제로 달에 착륙한 적이 없다는 달착륙 음모론을 말합니다. hoax가 장난이나 날조를 뜻하죠.
