New iPad to arrive in Korea this week

April 17, 2012 - 18:19 By Korea Herald
Apple said Monday that it will roll out the new iPad tablet computer in Korea on Friday but the fourth-generation Long Term Evolution service won’t be supported here.

The California-based tech giant said in a press release that the latest iPad will be launched in 12 countries, including Korea, following the first batch released last month in the U.S. and nine other countries.

The new retina display iPad will not offer the super-speed LTE service in Korea that it does in most other countries, since it is customized to run only on the 700 megahertz and 2.1 gigahertz wireless broadband spectrums .

Currently, the LTE service for the new iPad is only available on AT&T and Verizon networks in the U.S. and Bell, Rogers and Telus networks in Canada.

With Apple’s announcement of the new launch in Korea, local telecom carriers SK Telecom and KT Corp. unveiled their data plans for the latest iPad on Tuesday.

For two-year-contract subscribers, both the companies offer the Wi-Fi plus 4G models priced at 670,000 won for 16 gigabytes, 790,000 won for 32 gigabytes and 900,000 for 64 gigabytes.

The prices for the Wi-Fi only models are set at 617,000 for 16 gigabytes, 736,000 won for 32 gigabytes and 856,000 won for 62 gigabytes. SKT doesn’t sell the Wi-Fi only models.

Discount rates vary depending on individual data plans.

In addition to Korea, the new iPad will sell from Friday in Brunei, Croatia, Cyprus, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Malaysia, Panama, St Maarten, Uruguay and Venezuela.
