Caravan Engineered Structures said Friday that it had donated a prefabricated building to Fukushima, Japan to transform it into a playground for children who are suffering from the effects of last year’s nuclear disaster.

The company, also known as Caravan ES, said the building has been given to children who are unable to freely play in the area impacted by the Fukushima nuclear accident following the massive earthquake and tsunami.

The building, which is 36 meters long, 13 meters wide and 8.5 meters high, was previously leased by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency from last December to March of this year, according to its officials.

“The area which our building is constructed currently has radioactivity of a level which is almost not harmful to one’s body, but we decided to turn it into a children’s playground for their safety,” said Kwon Hyuck-chong, chief executive of Caravan ES.

In a related effort, it held a building donation ceremony at its office in southern Seoul on Thursday.

The company, founded in 2002, is well-known for launching several business projects with the United Nations since June 2003.

Its business portfolio ranges from housing and prefabricated buildings to international procurement, green technology as well as sports systems.

Since winning the Korea world-class product award in 2004 and gaining membership of the U.S.-based Industrial Fabric Association International in the same year, the firm has expanded its presence overseas by establishing branches in other regions, including New York, Tokyo and Sendai.
