Apple Inc.’s iPhone 5, only able to access the fastest available mobile networks on specific airwaves, is prompting disadvantaged carriers in Europe to cut prices for handsets from rivals such as Samsung Electronics Co.

The iPhone 5, which goes on sale today, will connect to fourth-generation wireless networks in Europe that run on a 1,800 megahertz band, favoring carriers who do have a network attuned to that frequency, including Germany’s Deutsche Telekom AG and its British EE venture with France Telecom SA. Vodafone Group Plc and Telefonica SA’s O2 unit will only be able to offer the iPhone 5 on their slower 3G networks.

The restrictions of the iPhone 5 will “push Vodafone and many other European operators harder into the arms of Samsung,” especially as the South Korean company’s popular Galaxy line of phones includes a 4G version that is compatible with their networks, said Robin Bienenstock, a London-based analyst for Sanford C Bernstein.

With the iPhone 5 predicted by analysts to become the fastest selling technology gadget in history, subsidies and promotions will help operators that only offer the device on slower networks to keep customers.

Vodafone lost its top spot in the U.K. to O2 after failing to win the exclusive rights to the first iPhone in 2007. The device became Telefonica’s best- selling phone ever and two-thirds of the clients coming to its U.K. network were poached from rivals. (Bloomberg)

아이폰5에 유럽 통신사들 '지각변동'

업계 전문가들은 이와 같은 아이폰5의 대역폭 제한으로 보다폰을 위시한 많은 유럽지역 통신사업자들이 삼성전자의 갤럭시 시리즈로 돌아서게 될 것이라고 예측했다. 갤럭시 시리즈 스마트폰들의 4G 대역폭 규격은 이들 통신사업자들이 제공하는 규격과 일치하기 때문이다.

한편 아이폰5가 역사상 가장 빠른 속도로 팔려나가는 전자기기가 될 것이라는 전문가 예측이 나오고 있는 가운데 일부 유럽지역 통신사업자들은 3G 네트워크를 통해서라도 아이폰을 이용하고자 하는 고객들을 붙잡기 위해 각종 보조금과 판촉 경쟁을 벌일 것이라는 설도 나오고 있다.

보다폰은 지난 2007년 최초로 출시된 아이폰3G 모델의 독점 판매권을 경쟁사인 O2에게 내주면서 영국 통신사업자 부문 1위의 자리까지 빼앗긴 바 있다. 또한 아이폰3G는 텔레포니카 사 역사상 가장 많이 팔린 휴대전화에 등극하기도 했다. (코리아헤럴드)
