지난 주에 이어 우리 일상의 대화를 좀 더 세련되게 만들 수 있는 표현들을 보겠습니다. 저희 책 『나는 더 영어답게 말하고 싶다 일상회화 편 2』에서 뽑은 표현들입니다.  

<실수, 부적절한 행동에 대해 말할 때>

A The presidential candidate feared that the skeletons in his closet would get revealed.

B That’s why he distracted the media with other events.

A 그 대선 후보는 자신의 과거 잘못이 탄로날까 두려워했어.

B 그래서 다른 이벤트로 언론의 관심을 분산시키려 했던 거야.

SITUATION ‘감춰둔 비밀’을 말할 때

평범하게 Everyone has some secrets to hide.

영어답게 Everyone has skeletons in their closet.

다른 사람에게 숨기는 혼자만의 비밀을 '벽장에 숨겨서 백골화 된 시신(skeletons in the closet)'에 빗댄 표현입니다.

A I volunteered to organize both my sister and best friend’s weddings in the same month.

B It’s like painting yourself into a corner. Is there any way you can take back one of the two commitments?

A 한 달 안에 언니하고 친한 친구 결혼식 둘 다를 준비하겠다고 자원을 해 버렸어.

B 스스로를 궁지에 몰아 넣은 거나 마찬가지네. 둘 중 하나는 취소할 수 없어?

SITUATION 스스로를 궁지에 몰아 넣는다고 할 때

평범하게 You pushed yourself into trouble.

영어답게 You painted yourself into a corner.

마루바닥에 페인트칠을 할 때 구석부터 칠하기 시작해 문 쪽으로 향해야 칠한 곳을 밟지 않고 나올 수 있죠. 만일 문 쪽에서 시작하여 구석 쪽으로 향한다면 젖은 페인트를 밟고 나와야 하는 어리석음을 범하게 됩니다. 그와 같은 어리석은 짓으로 스스로를 곤경에 빠뜨리는 것을 paint oneself into a corner라고 합니다.

A I think the actress is shooting herself in the foot repeatedly by saying too much on her Facebook page.

B Being honest is fine, but she needs to learn how to refrain from saying everything on her mind.

A 그 여배우는 페이스북에 말을 너무 많이 해서 계속 자기 발등을 찍고 있는 것 같아.

B 솔직한 건 좋은데, 생각나는 대로 다 말하지 않는 법을 배워야겠어.

SITUATION 자기 발등을 찍는다고 할 때

평범하게 He caused problems for himself by saying that.

영어답게 He shot himself in the foot by saying that.

‘자기 발등을 찍었다’라는 우리말과 발상이 동일한 표현입니다. 어리석은 행동을 해서 스스로에게 해를 입히는 것을 ‘총으로 자기 발을 쏜다’라고 말합니다.

A Manager Kim, who was very calm in the office, went rampant when he got drunk in the company outing.

B I guess it takes something like that for him to reveal his true colors.

A 사무실에서는 매우 조용하던 김과장이 회사 야유회에서 술에 취하니 통제가 안 되더군.

B 그런 기회가 있어야 자신의 본성을 드러내나 봐.

SITUATION 본색을 드러낸다고 할 때

평범하게 The comment revealed who he really is.

영어답게 The comment showed his true colors.

실제 색깔을 드러낸다는 뜻의 reveal one’s true colors는 우리말 ‘본성을 드러내다’에 해당하는 영어 표현입니다.

A I’m sorry you can’t come into this restaurant with flipflops on.

B I’m sorry I lost my shoes today. Could you bend the rules a little bit for me?

A 죄송합니다만 이 식당은 슬리퍼를 신고 들어가실 수 없습니다.

B 죄송한데 제가 오늘 신발을 잃어버렸어요. 원칙을 조금만 융통성 있게 적용해 주시면 안될까요?

SITUATION 규칙을 그대로 적용하지 않는다고 할 때

평범하게 I asked mom not to stick to the rules and allow me to go to the party.

영어답게 I asked mom to bend the rules and allow me to go to the party.

규칙(rule)을 구부린다(bend)는 말은 곧 ‘규칙을 융통성 있게 적용한다’, ‘원칙을 그대로 적용하지 않는다’는 의미입니다. 원칙을 제대로 안 지키는 것을 rule-bending이라고 표현하죠.

A Why is their engagement off?

B Mike dropped the ball when he insulted Mary’s mother.

A 왜 둘의 약혼이 없던 일이 됐어?

B 마이크가 메리 어머니를 모욕하는 실수를 저질렀어.

SITUATION 실수를 저지른다고 할 때

평범하게 John made a big mistake when he forgot his girlfriend’s birthday.

영어답게 John dropped the ball when he forgot his girlfriend’s birthday.

저글링하던 공을 떨어뜨리면 큰 실수를 저지르는 셈이죠. 그래서 drop the ball은 실수를 저지른다는 뜻을 지닙니다.

<복수, 정의에 대해 말할 때>

A I want to settle the score with last year’s gold medalist.

B Have you been practicing very hard?

A 작년 금메달리스트에게 복수를 좀 해야겠어.

B 열심히 연습했어?

SITUATION 복수한다고 할 때

평범하게 He came back to the ring to take revenge on his rival.

영어답게 He came back to the ring to settle the score with his rival.

내가 0:1로 당하고 있는 상황을 1:1로 만든다면 결국 복수를 한다는 뜻이 되죠. 그래서 settle the score 혹은 even the score는 당한 것을 갚아준다는 의미를 지닙니다.
