South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. said Tuesday it has acquired a U.S. medical equipment firm as part of efforts to bolster its healthcare business.

Samsung Electronics America acquired NeuroLogica, a leading computed tomography company headquartered in Danvers, Massachusetts, the company said in a press release. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Samsung’s U.S. unit will control the U.S. medical equipment maker, which develops medical imaging products and portable CT scanners.

“The acquisition of NeuroLogica is another important step in the expansion of Samsung’s medical imaging business and is a testament to our shared vision for a better and more complete healthcare experience,” said Tod Pike, senior vice president at Samsung’s Enterprise Business Division.

The move is the latest in Samsung’s efforts to diversify its revenue sources and nurture new growth engines. In 2010, the group announced plans to invest 23.3 trillion won ($21.5 billion) in the energy and healthcare sector.

As part of the plan, Samsung has acquired Medison, a local diagnostic ultrasound manufacturer, and the healthcare division of San Diego, California-based ITC Nexus Holding Company. 

Analysts and market watchers have been raising concerns on Samsung’s high dependence on its mobile business, which generates more than 60 percent of the company’s operating profit.

Samsung is the world’s top maker of smartphones, flat-panel TVs and computer memory chips. (Yonhap News)
