The South Korean Ambassador to China, Kim Jang-soo, Monday asked the northern Chinese province of Hebei to cut red tape and make it easier for Hyundai Motor Co. to build a new car plant in Hebei.
Kim made the remarks at a meeting with Hebei's Communist Party chief, Zhou Benshun, earlier in the day on the sidelines of an investment fair hosted by the Chinese province, according to a statement released by the South Korean Embassy.
Hyundai began construction of its fourth plant in the Chinese city of Changzhou, Hebei province, in April as it seeks to ease its capacity constraints and expand sales in the world's largest auto market.
"Ambassador Kim asked the Hebei province to strengthen support for infrastructure, including roads and electricity, for Hyundai Motor to build the Changzhou plant without problems," the statement said.
Kim also asked Zhou to "resolve difficulties facing South Korean companies doing business and making investments in Hebei," according to the statement.
The Hyundai plant in the city of Changzhou will start producing vehicles with an initial annual capacity of 200,000 units, with Hyundai planning to eventually increase the annual production capacity to 300,000 vehicles. (Yonhap)
