Unmarried women spend more as they age, while unmarried men’s spending shrinks with age, finance industry data showed Tuesday.
According to data compiled by Shinhan Card Co., single women’s monthly expenditure rose from 592,000 won ($534) in their 20s to 713,000 won in their 30s and peaked at 938,000 won in their 40s.
While the figure drops when single women hit their 50s, at 786,000 won the figure was significantly higher than that of single men in the same age group.
In contrast, single men’s spending peaks when they are in their 30s, and then nosedives from their 40s onward. On average, men in their 20s spend 579,000 won per month, which peaks at 931,000 won per month in their 30s.
The figure drops to 727,000 won for men in their 40s, and again to 610,000 won for those in their 50s.
In addition, the data showed that men spend less on themselves as they grow older, while single women’s expenditure on themselves remained relatively constant, ranging between 19.2 percent and 15.6 percent of overall spending.
