More than a dozen pharmacists were indicted Monday for distributing fake Viagra pills.

This is the first time pharmacists have been charged with selling the fake drugs, purchased through the back door by men seeking for solution to erectile dysfunction or to enhance their libido.

Investigators at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office said they have sought a summary indictment for a pharmacist surnamed Yoon and 14 others to pay between 1 and 5 million won ($940-$4,800) per case of selling fake Viagra and another renowned impotence treatment, Cialis. The counterfeit drugs were manufactured in China.

Prosecutors said those apprehended made a fortune by selling drugs they brought in from smugglers and illegal distributors at 2,000 won to 2,500 won per pill and branded them as authentic ones sold for 15,000-18,000 won at stores in Jongno, Jung and Yeongdeungpo districts in Seoul.

The prosecutors said the fake drugs contain double the standard amount of sildenafil citrate, the scientific name for Viagra, which could cause heart attacks and other side effects.

“We suspect more pharmacists to have participated in the illegal trade,” an investigator said, vowing to expand their probe.

심각한 부작용을 초래할 위험이 있는 중국산  '짝퉁' 발기부전 치료제를 시중 약국에서 버젓이 판매해온 약사들이 무더기로 재판에 넘겨졌다.

그동안 중국 밀매상이나 중간 판매상이 가짜 발기부전 치료제를 유통하다  적발된 사례는 많았으나 약사가 형사처벌된 것은 이번이 처음이다.

서울중앙지검 형사2부(김창 부장검사)는 가짜 비아그라 등을 소비자에게 판매한혐의(약사법 위반)로 윤모씨 등 약사 15명을 벌금 300만~700만원에 약식기소했다고 21일 밝혔다.

판매액이 소액이거나 가짜 제품임을 인식하지 못하고 판매해 범행의도가 없다는 정상이 참작된 약사 17명은 기소유예 처분됐다.

검찰에 따르면 유씨 등은 종로구와 중구, 영등포구 등지에서 약국을 운영하면서 중국산 짝퉁 비아그라, 시알리스 등을 정품으로 둔갑시켜 판매한 혐의를 받고 있다.

이들은 중간 판매상격인 재래시장 보따리상이나 영업사원 등을 통해 한 정당  2천~2천500원에 가짜 약을 사들여 정상가인 1만5천~1만8천원에 팔아 최대 9배의 폭리를 취했으며, 일부는 처방전도 없이 약을 불법 판매하기도 한 것으로 조사됐다.

 검찰은 이들이 이런 방식으로 최대 1천만원 상당의 부당이득을 챙긴 것으로  보고 있다.

이들이 판매한 짝퉁 제품 중에는 위조방지 홀로그램이 붙은 포장박스와  사용설명서까지 정품처럼 정교하게 위조해 일반인의 눈으로는 구별하기 어려운 것도  있었다고 검찰은 설명했다.

식품의약품안전청의 성분 분석 결과 이들 제품에는 발기부전 치료 성분인 '구연산실데나필' 함량이 정품보다 배 이상 많이 검출돼 심근경색이나 심장마비 등의  부작용 가능성도 그만큼 큰 것으로 알려졌다.

검찰 관계자는 "몰래 유통되던 짝퉁 발기부전 치료제가 버젓이 시중 약국을  통해 정품처럼 판매되고 있다는 사실이 확인됐다"며 "특히 일부 약사들은 중간 판매상을 직접 접촉해 가짜를 사들이는 등 적극적으로 범행한 것으로 드러났다"고 말했다.

검찰은 서울시내 대형 약국들이 중간 판매상들과 짜고 조직적인 유통망을  구축해 가짜 발기부전 치료제를 판매하고 있을 가능성도 있다고 보고 수사를 계속할  방침이다.
