"The Jungle Book," an American film, ascended to the top of the domestic box office on its debut weekend, data showed Monday.

Disney's adventure drama amassed 771,793 viewers on June 10-12, according to computerized box office figures from the Korean Film Council.

Based on British author Rudyard Kipling's timeless namesake story, the film cost $175 million to produce.

"Warcraft: The Beginning," adapted from the video game of the same name, came in second place with 555,356 in attendance.

The American fantasy film depicts a war between humans and a tribe of giant orcs from the video games series.

Acclaimed South Korean director Park Chan-wook's erotic thriller, "The Handmaiden" fell to No. 3 on its second weekend. It, however, surpassed 3 million in attendance with 526,557 new viewers.

"The Conjuring 2," the sequel to the internationally successful supernatural horror film "The Conjuring" was at No. 4, drawing 484,855 people.

Directed by James Wan, the sequel deals with the Enfield Poltergeist, one of the most horrific and unbelievably creepy cases investigated by real-life American supernatural phenomenon experts Ed and Lorraine Warren.

The Korean supernatural thriller "The Wailing" fell two notches to No. 5 on its fifth weekend. But it is soon expected to hit the 7-million mark in attendance with 6.6 million in the accumulated number of viewers as of Sunday. (Yonhap)
