Jan. 9, 2012 - 16:43 By Korea Herald
The United Nations will open a regional center here Tuesday for one of its legal bodies that oversees international trade.

The U.N. Commission on International Trade Law will hold the opening of its Regional Center for Asia and the Pacific, which will focus on the Middle East, Australia and Japan and other countries in the region.

The center is expected to promote trade and development in the region by backing international commercial transactions and settling disputes when necessary.

The opening ceremony on Tuesday is being attended by Minister of Justice Kwon Jae-jin, Incheon Mayor Song Young-gil and U.N. Legal Counsel Under-Secretary-General Patricia O’Brien.

After the opening ceremony, the center will hold a workshop to discuss the role of the new center in the region.

The U.N. body was created in 1966 to help promote international trade by regularizing global standards and removing legal obstacles.

The commission has 60 member states elected by the U.N. General Assembly.
