Kim Chang-ryul, a member of K-pop group DJ DOC and a sophomore at Kyung Hee Cyber University, has given his performance fees from school events and commercials to underprivileged students at the university as scholarships, the school said Sunday.

“I heard there are many students worrying about their tuition fees lately. The scholarship may not be large but I would like to help students in need,” Kim said.

The 39-year-old singer is well known for passing high school qualification and college entrance exams in 2010 as he missed his chance to learn at a younger age because of his singing career.

Last year, Kim gave the pay he received for emceeing school events and the special scholarship he received from the university to needy students. Three students benefited from Kim’s donation, the school said.

Kim plans to continue his good deed this year. He has pledged to donate his school commercial and school event emceeing fees, as well as scholarships he may receive in the future.

KHCU said Kim’s donation will be paid to students from low-income families.

Kim plans to give a lecture to students and his fans on Tuesday in Sinchon, western Seoul, about his resolution to better himself by studying and at the same time pursuing a singing career.
