Seoul City Mayor Park Won-soon left the country Friday, embarking on a 13-day tour of South American cities, including stops in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo and Argentina’s Buenos Aires.
During the visit, he will focus on strengthening ties with the cities in the field of sustainable city management.
“I hope that Seoul can find exemplary city development policies from the South American cities,” he said through a press release.
Park will attend the world congress of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives in Brazil on Sunday where he will sign a memorandum with the council to open an East Asia office in Seoul.
The ICLEI is an international association of local governments on sustainable development.
The mayor will then attend the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group in Rio de Janeiro, to be held on the sidelines of the Rio+20 summit on sustainable development.
The Seoul mayor plans to introduce the city’s environment policies such as reducing nuclear power plants, city farming and resource recycling.
