Two non-commissioned officers died on Friday due to an apparent cardiac arrest while undergoing separate physical tests, Army officials said.
A 40-year-old warrant officer, identified only by his surname Kang, suddenly collapsed during a 3-kilometer run, part of an annual fitness test at a military base in Cheorwon, about 80
kilometers northeast of Seoul, they said.
Kang was immediately sent to a nearby hospital while performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but failed to recover, the officials said.
Also on Friday in Seoul, another 53-year-old command sergeant major, identified by his surname Choi, died during a physical fitness test at the Special Warfare Command, they said.
Choi passed tests of push-ups and sit-ups, but was later found dead with foam coming out of the mouth near the test site as he was apparently warming up for a 3-km run, officials said.
The exact causes of their deaths were being investigated, they said. (Yonhap News)

육군간부 2명 체력검정 도중 사망
현역 육군 간부 2명이 군 체력검정 측정 도중에 숨지는 사고가 발생했다.
17일 육군에 따르면 이날 오전 9시께 강원도 철원군 철원공설운동장에서 육군 5 군단 소속 강모(40) 준위가 3㎞ 뜀걸음 도중 쓰러져 인근에 있던 군의관이 응급조치 를 하고 민간 병원으로 후송했으나 오전 10시 18분에 숨졌다.
또 이날 오전 10시 10분께 서울 송파구 거여동 특전사령부에서 최모(53) 원사가 입에 거품을 물고 쓰러져 있는 것이 지나가던 병사에 발견돼 인근 군의관이 달려가 조치를 했으나 숨졌다.
육군 관계자는 "최 원사는 오전 9시에서 10시 사이에 팔굽혀펴기와 윗몸일으키기를 마친 상태였다"면서 "3㎞ 뜀걸음을 하기 위해 근처에 있는 연병장으로 이동한 뒤 함께 있던 동료에게 '몸을 더 풀고 오겠다'고 말한 뒤 약 100ｍ 떨어진 곳에서 발견됐다"고 말했다.
이 관계자는 "오늘 철원과 서울 지역 날씨가 체력검정하기에 문제가 될 수준은 아니었으며 두 사람 모두 체력검정 전에 군의관 진단에서 혈압 수치 등은 이상이 없었다"면서 "다만, 최 원사는 최근 건강검진에서 당뇨 재검사 통보를 받은 것으로 안다"고 덧붙였다.
육군은 강 준위와 최 원사의 사망 소식을 유가족에게 알리는 한편 부검 등을 통해 정확한 사망 원인을 조사할 방침이다.
한편 군의 체력검정 기준이 강화된 지난해에는 20대 공군 중위 1명이 체력검정도중에 숨졌다.
