A college student on a leave of absence to raise college funds worked a part-time job by day and allegedly committed thefts by night has been arrested, according to Yonhap News.

The student, surnamed Lee, 22, faces charges of breaking into shopping malls and offices to rob them late at night.

Lee allegedly stole fourteen times recently, by sneaking into offices and arcades around Jinyeong, Gimhae city.

On May 30, Lee allegedly broke into an office by unlocking the window with a screwdriver which he had prepared in advance. He then allegedly took a laptop, cash and jewelry from inside the office.

According to the police investigation, Lee committed the crimes to get his college tuition fees for his third semester. He applied for a leave of absence at the end of his freshman year to work as an administrative manager for an office in the shopping district.

However, when he could not save enough money for the tuition fees, he decided to steal instead, police said.

대학 등록금 때문에..낮엔 아르바이트 밤엔 절도

(김해=연합뉴스) 최병길 기자 = 비싼 등록금을 마련하기 위해 낮에는 아르바이트로 일하고 밤에는 절도행각을 벌이던 대학 휴학생이 경찰에 붙잡혔다.

경남 김해서부경찰서는 24일 늦은 밤 상가와 사무실 등을 돌며 금품을 훔친 혐의(야간건조물 침입 절도)로 모 대학 휴학생 이모(22)씨를 검거했다.

이씨는 지난달 30일 오전 2시20분께 김해시 진영읍 모 사무실에 미리 준비한 일자드라이브로 창문틀을 열고 침입해 노트북과 귀금속, 현금 등을 훔쳐 달아나는 등 최근 14차례에 걸쳐 진영지역 상가와 사무실, 단독주택 등지에서 시가 2천만원 상당의 금품을 턴 혐의를 받고 있다.

경찰조사 결과 이씨는 모 대학에서 1년간 공부하다 비싼 등록금으로 휴학한 뒤 학비를 마련하기 위해 낮에는 모 상가 사무실 관리기사로 일했지만 돈을 모으기 어려워지자 이 같은 절도 행각을 벌인 것으로 확인됐다.

경찰은 이씨에 대해 구속영장을 신청할 예정이다.
