Jeju trekking paths temporarily closed after murder case

July 24, 2012 - 20:22 By Korea Herald
JEJU (Yonhap News) ― Some parts of the famous trekking paths on the country’s southernmost island of Jeju have been temporarily closed following a recent kidnapping and murder case there, officials said Tuesday.

A man identified only by the surname of Kang was arrested Monday on suspicion of kidnapping and killing a 40-year-old female tourist and abandoning her body.

She went missing near the trekking course on July 12, one day after she arrived from Seoul alone to hike the popular coastal walking trails, called “Olle.”

The victim’s body was found in a bamboo field near trekking route 1 late Monday, and police are continuing their investigation of the crime scene to find details of the incident.

“We’ve decided to temporarily close route 1 to actively cooperate with the ongoing police investigation,” an official of the Jeju Olle Organization said.

A walking festival scheduled for four days from Nov. 9 on trail routes 6 through 9, however, will go ahead, the official said.

The organization also vowed to devise measures to ensure public safety, following public outcry over the lack of safety measures on the popular tourist attraction.

Though a total of 26 olle tracks stretch 430 kilometers along the islands coast line and through forests, not a single surveillance camera monitors the paths.

“We will discuss with the government agencies concerned ways to prevent crimes and secure safety, including increasing patrols and installing closed-circuit television cameras,” the official said.
