Three killed in Malaysia landslide: report

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) -- Three women were killed and three more people feared still buried under debris Monday by a landslide near Malaysia‘s Cameron Highlands tourist spot, the official Bernama news agency said.

The landslide late Sunday afternoon buried several houses in a village in the region, which is about 300 kilometers north of the capital Kuala Lumpur, police said earlier.

Bernama said three other people were seriously hurt in the landslide at the Sungai Ruil settlement after a heavy downpour.

The village is occupied by “orang asli,” the Malaysian term for the various indigenous tribes that inhabit the predominantly ethnic Malay country.

The Cameron Highlands is a tea plantation region and former British colonial hill station retreat that is popular with tourists.

Malaysia has suffered a series of landslide disasters in recent years.

In May, a landslide hit an orphanage in a rural town just outside Kuala Lumpur, killing 16 people, mostly young boys.

말聯 피서지서 산사태, 10여명 사상

말레이시아 동남부 파항주의 피서지 카메 론하이랜즈에서 7일 오후 산사태가 발생, 3명이 숨지고 여러 명이 다치거나 실종됐 다고 국영 베르나마 통신이 8일 보도했다.

카메론하이랜즈경찰서 완 모흐드 자하리 서장은 이날 오전부터 내린 많은 비로 오후 5시 45분 발생한 산사태가 카메론하이랜즈의 숭아이 루일 오랑 아실 주택단지를 덮쳤다며 여성 사망자 3명이 확인됐고 3명이 크게 다쳤다고 말했다.

그는 또 최소 3명 이상이 아직 무너진 건물 속에 갇혀 있는 것으로 보인다며 경찰과 소방관, 민방위 인력 등 수백명이 구조작업을 펼치고 있다고 말했다.

기상 당국은 8일에도 이 지역에 많은 비가 내릴 것으로 예보했으며 당국은 산사 태가 일어난 지역 인근 주민들을 안전한 곳으로 대피시켰다.

카메론하이랜즈는 수도 쿠알라룸푸르에서 북쪽으로 약 145km 떨어진 해발 1천400ｍ의 고산지대로 연중 기후가 서늘해 피서지로 인기가 높은 지역이다. (연합뉴스)
