Concerns rise over side effects of bimaxillary operation

With the rising populary of bimaxillary operations in Korea, side effects of the double jaw surgery, including parasthesia and asymmetry, are increasingly reported.

According to Korea Consumer Agency, the agency received 121 damage cases from 2010 to June this year. The numbers are quickly increasing as the agency took 44 cases this year until June, almost as many as the 48 in all of 2011.

The reason for such phenomena is that many celebrities have gotten better looking after getting bimaxillary operation. As they appear with prettier faces, many women also are trying to have the surgery to look more beautiful.

However, the celebrities who had the surgery have emphasized how dangerous bimaxillary operation is. Actress Shin Eun-kyung said that she would never do the surgery again while appearing on a TV talk show, “Healing Camp.”

She thought that people should not get bimaxillary operation for beauty.

The Korea Consumer Agency warned that those who want to get the surgery should consult with at least two doctors. The agency added that people should not blindly trust advertisements of bimaxillary operation.

3일 한국소비자원에 따르면 2010년부터 지난 6월까지 접수된 양악수술 피해 상담 건수는 121건에 달한다. 2010년 29건, 2011년 48건이었으며 올해는 6월까지 무려 44건으로 지난해 전체 건수와 맞먹을 정도이며 감각 이상이나 비대칭 같은 부작용에 대한 사례도 부쩍 늘어났다.

이러한 현상은 모 연예인이 양악 수술 후 미인이 됐다는 소문 퍼져서 젊은 여성들이 수술하는 사례가 늘어나 피해가 더 커진 것으로 보인다.

하지만 정작 양악 수술을 받은 연예인들 중 일부는 예뻐 보이기 위한 양약수술에 대해 부정적인 의견을 방송에서 보여왔다. 지난 4월, 배우 신은경은 SBS ‘힐링캠프’ 에 출연해 “양악 수술은 예뻐지기 위해 할 수술은 아니다,”라고 말했다.

소비자원은 "외모를 중시하는 사회 분위기와 성형 기술의 발전, 다양한 성형 광고 때문에 성형 수술을 받는 사람이 늘면서 양악수술 피해 상담도 급증하는 추세다" 고 말하며 수술 전 적어도 2명 이상의 의사와 충분히 상의해 부작용과 효과를 미리 알아보도록 권고했다.

특히 부작용이나 효과 미흡 때는 병원측과 후속 조치를 사전 협의하고 지하철역 등에 부착된 수술 전후 성형광고 사진은 과신하지 말라고 당부했다.
