A man arrested for attempted murder has been found to be the missing suspect of a 2006 sexual assault case, DNA records found.

The suspect, Song, 47, allegedly tried to kill his brother due to economic problems in December 2012.

The police sent Song’s DNA to the National Forensic Service for further investigation. With the recently developed Automated Fingerprint Identification System technology, the organization found that the DNA matches that of an unknown suspect of an attempted rape in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, in 2006. A woman in her 50s was allegedly attacked by the suspect on a hiking trail on Dorak Mountain in Yangju. The police obtained DNA from a blood stain on the victim’s clothes as she had bitten Song’s ear to resist the attack, according to Yangju Police Station.

Song, now held in Uijeongbu Prison, is under police investigation for committing the previous crime.

The AFIS has helped to solve dozens of cases since its launch in 2009.

범인 잡고 보니 6년전 놓친 강간미수범!

디엔에이(DNA)가 범죄 사건의 목격자 노릇을 톡톡히 하고 있다.

지난해 11월 경기도 포천시에서 금전 문제로 자신의 친형을 흉기로 찔러 살해하려고 한 40대 남성이 경찰에 붙잡혔다.

포천경찰서는 살인미수 혐의로 송모(47)씨를 구속하고 국립과학수사연구원에 전과 6범인 송씨의 DNA 감식을 의뢰했다.

국과수로부터 놀라운 답변이 돌아왔다.

송씨의 DNA가 6년 전 발생한 강간치상 사건 용의자의 것과 일치한다는 내용이었다.

지난 2006년 7월 양주시 도락산 등산로에서 한 남성이 50세 여성을 흉기로 위협해 성폭행하려다가 미수에 그치는 사건이 있었다.

이 남성은 피해 여성이 귀를 물어뜯는 등 격렬히 저항하자 그 자리에서 도망쳤다.

당시 경찰이 단기간 내 용의자 검거에 실패하면서 사건은 처리되지 않은 채 남았다.

그러나 이 남성은 피해 여성의 등산복 상의에 혈흔을 남겼고, 경찰은 DNA를 확보해뒀다.

이 작은 단서가 6년 넘게 처리 안 되고 남아있던 사건 해결의 열쇠가 된 것.

포천경찰서는 지난해 12월10일 당시 사건을 수사했던 양주경찰서에 이를 통보했다.

경찰은 현재 의정부교도소에 가둔 송씨를 강간치상 혐의로 조사하고 있다.

송씨는 성폭행 미수 사실에 대해 진술을 거부하는 것으로 알려졌다. (연합)
