The British charity Oxfam says the world‘s 100 richest people are increasing inequality and holding back the world’s ability to tackle poverty.

The world‘s 100 richest people brought in $240 billion last year, The Guardian reported Saturday. Oxfam said that amount of money could put an end to extreme poverty four times over.

In a report called “The Cost of Inequality: How Wealth and Income Extremes Hurt Us All,” Oxfam calls on world leaders to curb income extremes and commit to reducing inequality to at least 1990 levels.

Extreme wealth is “economically inefficient, politically corrosive, socially divisive and environmentally destructive,” said Barbara Stocking, Oxfam’s chief executive.

“We can no longer pretend that the creation of wealth for a few will inevitably benefit the many -- too often the reverse is true,” she said.

“We need a global new deal to reverse decades of increasing inequality. As a first step world leaders should formally commit themselves to reducing inequality to the levels seen in 1990,” Stocking said. (UPI)

영국의 옥스팜 자선단체에 따르면 세계 100대 부자들은 빈곤문제를 해결하는 데 도움이 되기는커녕 소득불평등과 가난 문제를 더욱 심화시키고 있다.

세계에서 가장 부자인 100명은 지난 해 2,536,800조 원을 벌어들였다고 더가디안(The Guardian)이 토요일 보도했다. 옥스팜은 그 돈이면 전세계적 빈곤문제를 네 번을 해결할 돈이라고 평했다.

“불평등의 비용: 부와 소득이 우리 모두에게 끼치는 영향” 보고서에서 옥스팜은 세계의 부자들에게 경제적 불평등 수준을 1990년대 수준으로 돌려놓기를 요청한다.

극빈곤이란 “경제적으로 부족하고, 정치적가 부패해있으며, 사회적으로 분열되어 있고, 환경이 파괴되어 있는 상태”라고 옥스팜의 대표인 바바라 스타킹(Barbara Stocking)이 말했다.

“우리는 더 이상 몇몇에게만 부가 집중되는 것이 많은 이들에게 혜택을 준다고 믿어서는 안 됩니다. 그 반대가 현실이죠.”라고 덧붙였다.

“경제적 불평등 문제가 더 이상 심화되지 않게 다른 원칙이 필요합니다.”라고 스타킹이 전했다. (코리아헤럴드)
