Import farm price index falls to over-7 year low in Feb.: data

March 24, 2015 - 12:12 By KH디지털2

The price of imported farm products fell to an over-seven year low in February mainly due to a drop in international grain, vegetable and fruit prices, government data showed Tuesday.

According to the Korea Customs Service, the farm produce import price index stood at just 97, down 4.5 percent from January and 4.1 percent from a year earlier.

"This is the lowest reading since 89.9 reached in December of 2007," the office said. It pointed out the general drop in key staples, such as grain, affected overall numbers.

It said while grain and vegetable prices fell, those for processed food and nuts rose.

Prices for grain backtracked 5 percent on-year and 3.4 percent from the first month of 2015, while numbers for kidney beans and corn all fell when compared with the same one-month period last year and from January. Prices for oranges were down, while those for grapes went up.

The KCS said that the index for fishery products stood at 100, down 4.5 percent on-year and 2 percent from the month before.

In regards to imported meat prices, the latest findings showed the import index dipping 2.7 percent on-month but shooting up 15.9 percent from the previous year.

Imported beef prices soared 24.2 percent on-year, with chicken and pork gaining 11.3 percent and 6.3 percent, respectively.

For all farm, meat and fisheries products, the import price index stood at 109, down 3.5 percent from 113 reached in January but 1.5 percent higher than the 108 tallied for February 2014.

The overall monthly gain was helped in part by a rise in imported meat and processed food prices, the customs service said. (Yonhap)
