Prosecution declares war on organized gangs

Feb. 21, 2014 - 14:43 By 정주원
Prosecutors declared an all-out war on organized crime groups on Friday as they are expanding into various sectors of society.

Veteran prosecutors from district prosecutors' offices across the country gathered at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office in southern Seoul to discuss ways to effectively clamp down on the organized crimes, SPO officials said.

"The prosecution, armed with new investigative techniques, will launch an extensive crackdown on organized gangs, which are evolving," said Yun Gap-guen, a senior prosecutor at the SPO.

The SPO said the so-called "third-generation organized gangs" across the country have advanced to illegal business sectors, such as Internet gambling and private loans.

Concerns have also risen about corruption links between the criminal rings and politicians, especially ahead of by-elections in June, the SPO officials said.

"The effective war against the new type of the gangs can be carried out successfully only if the prosecutors and investigators join forces," Yun added.

The prosecution said it will uproot this new phenomenon by working together with investigators experienced in financial crimes, and work out a comprehensive measure to eradicate financial crimes such as tax evasion and embezzlement. (Yonhap News)
