Hyundai Motor Group said Friday that it would launch a new social contribution program called “H-Jump School” aimed at fostering creative talent and bridging the educational divide.

Group officials said under the new CSR program, the conglomerate selects a group of college students and provides them with resources development education to grow into global talents.

In return for receiving such benefits, the selected students are required to help poor teens study, the officials said.

The conglomerate held a signing event for the educational initiative on Thursday, in which Hyundai Motor’s senior vice president Park Gwang-sik, Seoul Scholarship Foundation chairperson Rhee Kyung-hee and social enterprise Jump’s president Lee Eui-hun.

“Hyundai will put constant efforts into making the society a place where people are able to ‘jump’ for a better life through education,” a Hyundai official said.

The program is expected to help reduce the educational gap among teenage students, according to Korea’s largest carmaker.

The firm will pick and nurture 500 university students over the next five years, who will then offer free tutoring for 2,000 teenagers from low-income families.

The first 50 university students recently picked for the program will teach school subjects including Korean, English and mathematics at 15 educational centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province from September through next July.
