CNN presenter and journalist Anderson Cooper outed himself as gay Monday, saying he "couldn't be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud."

The 45-year-old confirmed what for many was common knowledge in an email to a journalist for The Daily Beast online who had asked Cooper to comment on the issue of celebrities coming out.

"Even though my job puts me in the public eye, I have tried to maintain some level of privacy in my life. Part of that has been for purely personal reasons," he wrote to journalist Andrew Sullivan.

"I think most people want some privacy for themselves and the people they are close to," he added in the email, published on the British journalist's "The Dish" blog on the Daily Beast.

But said Cooper: "Recently... I've begun to consider whether the unintended outcomes of maintaining my privacy outweigh personal and professional principle.

"It's become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something -- something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid. This is distressing because it is simply not true.

He continued: "The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn't be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud."

Cooper is the main anchor of the daily news show "Anderson Cooper 360" on CNN, but also had a syndicated daytime talk show, "Anderson."

His comments came after an article last week in "Entertainment Weekly"

highlighting an emerging trend for gay people in public life to come out in a more restrained way than in the past.

The CNN presenter said in his email published Monday: "I have always been very open and honest about this part of my life with my friends, my family, and my colleagues.

"In a perfect world, I don't think it's anyone else's business, but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted. I'm not an activist, but I am a human being and I don't give that up by being a journalist." (AFP)

세계 최대 케이블뉴스 채널인 미국 CNN방송 의 대표앵커 앤더슨 쿠퍼(45)가 자신이 동성애자임을 밝혔다고 경쟁채널 폭스뉴스 등이 2일(현지시간) 보도했다.

보도에 따르면 쿠퍼는 최근 인터넷매체 `데일리 비스트'의 앤드루 설리번에게 보낸 온라인 서한에서 "사실 나는 게이다. 지금까지 늘 그래왔고, 앞으로도 그럴 것 "이라고 `커밍아웃'했다.

그는 특히 "나는 내 자신에 대해 더할 나위없이 행복하고 편안하며 자랑스럽다"

고 강조했다.

쿠퍼는 이 서한에서 자신의 성적 취향에 대해 개인적, 직업적 이유로 숨겨왔으나 침묵으로 일관하는 것이 동성애자임을 창피하게 생각하고 있다는 잘못된 인상을 줄 수 있다는 판단으로 `고백'하게 됐다고 설명했다.

그는 또 "나는 스스로 내성적인 사람이라고 생각하고 있고, 이것(커밍아웃)으로 인해 얼마 되지 않는 나의 개인적인 영역이 없어지길 원하지 않는다"면서 "기자로서 의 프라이버시를 지키는 것보다 이를 공개적으로 밝히는 것이 더 중요하다고 생각한 다"고 말했다.

CNN의 간판 프로그램 가운데 하나인 `앤더슨 쿠퍼(AC) 360°'를 진행하고 있는 쿠퍼는 국내외 재난ㆍ재해 지역은 물론 전투 지역에서도 생생한 현장 취재와 보도를 통해 미국을 대표하는 현역 저널리스트로 명성을 떨치고 있다.

특히 `AC 360°'는 올해 미 동성애차별반대연합(GLAAD)으로부터 올해의 상을 수상하기도 했다.

이에 대해 CNN은 논평을 피하면서 "쿠퍼가 방송에서 이 문제를 얘기할 계획은 없다"고 밝혔다.

작가였던 부친 와이어트 에머리 쿠퍼와 사교계를 주름잡는 패션 디자이너였던 어머니 글로리아 반더빌트 사이에서 태어난 쿠퍼는 예일대를 졸업한 뒤 ABC방송 기자를 거쳐 2001년 CNN에 입사했다.

폭스뉴스는 전국 방송의 기자가 커밍아웃을 하는 사례는 찾아보기 힘들다면서 지난해 동성애자임을 밝힌 CNN의 유명 앵커이자 기자인 돈 레몬이 대표적인 경우라고 소개했다.

지금까지 미국 방송 앵커로는 MSNBC의 레이첼 매도우, 토머스 로버츠 등이 동성 애자임을 공개했다.
