The two teams that clashed in the second round of the South Korean baseball playoffs last year will square off in a rematch starting this week.

On Tuesday, the SK Wyverns will host the Lotte Giants at their home Munhak Stadium in Incheon, just west of Seoul, to open the second round series of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) playoffs. The Wyverns, by virtue of finishing second in the regular season, earned the bye to the best-of-five second round. The Giants, seeded fourth, eliminated the Doosan Bears in four games in the first round.

These two clubs also met in last year's second round, and the Wyverns, then seeded No. 3, knocked off the second-seeded Giants in five games to reach the championship Korean Series.

The Wyverns last played a game on Oct. 6, the final day of the regular season, and watched the Giants edge out the Bears in the hard-fought first round. The Wyverns also hold a 10-9 edge in their head-to-head meetings during the regular season.

The Wyverns have won three of the past five Korean Series titles, and they have reached a record five straight championship finals. With their core players still in lineup, the Wyverns boast a wealth of postseason experience.

The Giants are in the playoffs for the fifth straight year, but they haven't been to the Korean Series since 1999. The franchise's last championship came in 1992.

Bullpens have carried both clubs this deep into the postseason.

The Wyverns were 19-13 in one-run games during the season, the best winning percentage in such situations in the KBO. The Giants, which until this season had been known for offense, put up the second-best bullpen earned run average (ERA) this season.

If the Giants are to get past the Wyverns, they will have to solve two left-handed relievers out of the SK bullpen.

Setup man Park Hee-soo pitched in 65 games, going 8-1 with six saves and a KBO-record 34 holds, along with a 1.32 ERA. He struck out 93 batters in 82 innings.

Park usually takes care of the eighth inning, and hands it over to Jung Woo-ram in the ninth. Jung recorded 30 saves and a 2.20 ERA in his first full-season as the closer.

These two southpaws have been especially strong against the Giants. Park earned six of his eight victories against Lotte. Jung didn't give up a run in five games against the Giants and earned four saves.

The Giants can stack their lineup with right-handed hitters, but both Park and Jung have been almost as effective against righties as against lefties.

The Giants bullpen is led by Chong Tae-hyon, the former closer for SK. Hampered by injuries, Chong only pitched in 24 games in the second half of the season, giving up only two runs in 23 1/3 innings. Incidentally, SK was the only KBO club to score off Chong.

He was named the most valuable player (MVP) of the first round series, after picking up a win and two saves over four scoreless innings. Chong appears to have supplanted Kim Sa-yool as the closer in the postseason. Kim earned a franchise-record 34 saves in the regular season but fell out of favor of manager Yang Seung-ho after his late season swoon.

On offense, slugging third baseman Choi Jeong will lead the way for the Wyverns. He belted a career-high 26 home runs in the regular season, five of them against Lotte.

For Lotte, outfielder Son A-seop takes a .382 batting average against SK pitching, along with 10 RBIs. Catcher Kang Min-ho, who sustained a left eye injury in the previous series when a bad hop on a throw from center field nailed him in the face, missed three games in the first round but could be ready for the next round. He led the Giants with 15 RBIs against the Wyverns.

The Wyverns have the home field advantage and will host the first two games at Munhak on Tuesday and Wednesday. The third game will move to the Giants' home, Sajik Stadium in Busan, about 450 kilometers southeast of Seoul, on Friday. The fourth game, if necessary, will be at Sajik on Saturday, and the fifth game will be back at Munhak on Oct. 22.

The Samsung Lions, the defending KBO champions, earned the bye to the Korean Series after finishing first in the regular season and will take on the winner of the Wyverns-Giants clash. The Korean Series is scheduled to begin on Oct. 24. (Yonhap News)

◇SK '어게인 2011'..롯데 '올해는 다르다' = SK는 지난해 플레이오프에서 롯데 를 3승2패로 따돌리고 한국시리즈 티켓을 거머쥐었다.

팽팽한 접전 속에 5차전에서 터진 '가을 사나이' 박정권의 투런포 두 방을 앞세워 SK는 롯데의 거센 추격을 따돌렸다.

이미 롯데를 꺾어 본 SK 선수들은 자신감에 차 있다.

무엇보다 6년 연속 가을 잔치에 출전하면서 선수들이 포스트시즌을 즐길 줄 안다는 점이 큰 자산이다.

SK는 단기전에서 승부를 가르는 수비•주루 실력에서 롯데에 비교 우위에 있다.

특히 정규리그 1점차 승부에서 19승13패로 8개 구단 중 가장 높은 승률을 올릴 정도로 박빙의 경기에서 강세를 보였다.

1점 승부에 강하다는 사실은 다양한 득점 루트를 보유하고 있다는 점을 반영한다.

가을의 베테랑 SK에 맞서는 롯데의 최대 무기는 패기다.

10년 넘게 팀을 짓눌러온 포스트시즌 1차 관문의 악몽에서 벗어나면서 롯데 선수들의 사기는 하늘을 찌를 듯하다.

주포 이대호(30)가 일본프로야구 오릭스 버펄로스에 진출하면서 타선은 약해졌으나 SK 불펜의 대들보였던 정대현•이승호를 자유계약선수(FA)로 한꺼번에 영입하면서 마운드는 더 튼튼해졌다.

특히 무릎 통증으로 8월에서야 1군에 합류한 정대현이 정상 컨디션을 회복하면서 롯데는 SK를 제압할 수 있다며 회심의 미소를 짓고 있다.

정대현은 준플레이오프에서 완벽투를 뽐내고 1승2세이브를 올리며 시리즈 최우수선수(MVP)에 뽑혔다.

◇SK 박희수 vs 롯데 손아섭 = 양팀의 올해 19차례 대결 결과를 살펴보면, 1점차 승부 세 번을 비롯해 2점차 미만에서 10번이나 명암이 갈릴 정도로 접전을 치렀다.

34홀드를 올리며 홀드왕에 오른 SK 불펜의 '필승 보증수표' 박희수가 올해 거둔 8승 중 6승을 롯데를 제물로 챙긴 점에 비춰보면 SK가 경기 후반 뒷심을 발휘한 사실을 알 수 있다.

이만수 SK 감독은 박희수를 마운드에 올려 롯데 타선을 먼저 봉쇄하고 나서 타선의 도움을 받아 전세를 뒤집는 전략을 펼쳤다.

선발보다 계투진이 돋보이는 SK의 특성상 결국 롯데는 박희수를 넘지 못하고서는 승리를 장담하기 어렵다.

마무리 정우람도 롯데와의 5경기에 등판해 4세이브, 평균자책점 0을 기록하며 깔끔하게 틀어막는 등 인상적인 성적을 남겼다.

타자 중에서는 롯데 마운드를 상대해 홈런 5방에 14타점을 올린 최정과 3홈런을 때리고 타율 0.417을 때린 조인성이 돋보인다.

SK 타선은 번트, 팀 배팅 등 '스몰볼'의 정교함은 물론 장타력에서도 롯데를 앞 질렀다.

'양떼 불펜'으로 두산을 제압한 롯데는 준플레이오프 4경기를 거치면서 타자들의 컨디션이 오른 이상 중심 타선의 장타력에 기대를 걸고 있다.

중심에는 손아섭이 있다.

준플레이오프 4경기에서 타율 0.250(16타수4안타)에 그친 그는 그러나 3안타를 2루타로 장식하며 롯데 타선을 이끌었다.

정규리그에서 SK를 상대로 롯데 타자 중 가장 높은 타율 0.382를 때리고 타점도 10개를 수확했다.

준플레이오프에서 수비하다가 눈을 다친 강민호가 정상 출격하는 점도 롯데에는 호재다.

강민호는 SK 마운드를 제물로 홈런 3방, 팀 내 최다인 15타점을 거둬들였다.

단기전에서는 결정적인 홈런에서 명암이 갈리는 경우가 많아 롯데가 장타력을 회복한다면 SK 타선과의 방망이 싸움에서 좋은 대결을 벌일 것으로 점쳐진다.

정규리그 맞대결에서 SK는 홈런 15개, 롯데는 10개를 터뜨렸다.
