A former BBC presenter has been charged with sexually abusing children, although it was not related to the ongoing Jimmy Savile investigations, British police said on Tuesday.

Norfolk Police said that Michael Souter, a former presenter for BBC Radio Norfolk in eastern England, had been charged with 18 offences against boys, one offence against a man and one against a woman.

The alleged offences date back to between 1979 and 1999.

A spokesman for the force told AFP the charges were not connected to Operation Yewtree, the Scotland Yard investigation into the late BBC star Jimmy Savile who is now accused of sexually abusing hundreds of children over four decades.

Souter, 59, is due to appear before Norwich Magistrates‘ Court in Norfolk on November 30.

The former radio presenter, who now runs a media consultancy, issued a statement “strenuously” denying the allegations.

“This is the third time that Norfolk Police have investigated these alleged offences,” he said.

“On both previous occasions, the Crown Prosecution Service advised against making charges.” He added that the current investigation against him started two years ago. (AFP)

작고한 전(前) 인기 DJ 지미 새빌의 성범죄 파문으로 최대 위기에 봉착한 영국 BBC의 또다른 전직 진행자가 아동 성범죄 혐의로 경찰에 붙잡혔다.

잉글랜드 동부 노퍽 소재 경찰은 BBC 라디오 노퍽지국의 전 진행자 마이클 수터(59)를 지난 1979년부터 약 20년간 남자 어린이들에게 총 18차례에 걸쳐 성폭력을 가한 혐의로 체포했다고 13일(현지시간) 밝혔다.

경찰에 따르면 수터는 성인 남성과 성인 여성을 상대로도 각각 1차례씩 성범죄를 저지른 혐의를 받고 있다.

노퍽경찰 관계자는 그러나 수터의 혐의사실은 런던경찰이 수사하고 있는 새빌의 성범죄 혐의와는 관련이 없다고 밝혔다.

수터는 BBC에서 9년간 라디오 진행자 겸 제작진으로 일하다 독립, 현재 미디어 컨설팅 회사를 운영 중이다.

수터 측은 “노퍽경찰이 이들 혐의를 수사하는 것은 이번이 세번째로, 이전 수사에서는 검찰이 무혐의 처리를 권고했다”며 의혹을 부인했다.

그는 이달 30일 노퍽 소재 노리치 치안판사 법원에 출두할 예정이다.

음악 프로그램 ’탑오브더팝스‘의 DJ로 이름을 날렸던 새빌이 장기간에 걸쳐 미성년자들에게 성폭력을 행사했고 피해자가 수백 명에 이른다는 의혹이 일면서 BBC는 창사 이래 최악의 위기에 빠졌다는 평가를 받고 있다.

BBC는 직원들에게 소셜미디어 등에서 이번 사건에 대해 왈가왈부를 자제하라며 사내 분위기 진화에 나서기도 했다.

최근 보직사퇴한 헬렌 보덴 보도국장의 대행을 맡은 뉴스취재책임자 프란 언스워스가 직원들에게 이메일을 보내 협조를 요구했다고 데일리 텔레그래프가 13일 전했다.

그는 이메일에서 “우리 회사의 일부 문제들이 소셜미디어나 국내 언론에 드러내 놓고 오르내리지 않는다면 도움이 될 것”이라며 이같이 촉구한 것으로 전해졌다.

BBC는 언스워스가 “그런 성격의 이메일을 보낸 것은 맞다”며 시인했다. (연합뉴스)
