GS Home Shopping reaps W9.1b dividends in China

Nov. 22, 2015 - 17:48 By KH디지털2

GS Home Shopping earned around 9.1 billion won ($7.9 million) in dividend income from its business operations in China, and expects to see a robust performance in operating profits in other countries, company officials said Sunday.

The firm said in a regulatory filing that it has received $3.95 million from China Home Shopping Group, in which GS Home Shopping holds a 28.2 percent stake.

GS Home Shopping made inroads into the Chinese market in 2012 in the form of buying shares of the Chinese home shopping company.

The amount of money received is half of the $7.9 million that GS Home Shopping is to receive in divided income, and the company is expected to receive the remaining half next year.

The total amount of products and services that GS Home Shopping sold to customers in China rose from 355 billion won in 2012 to 553 billion won in 2014, and is expected to hit the 700 billion won mark this year with the rise of fashion, beauty and e-commerce.

GS Home Shopping is also seeing their figures rise in other countries whose markets they have entered, including India, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Turkey, with the total amount (including that of China) reaching 894 billion won in 2014.

“Our profitability is quickly improving so we expect the total overseas business profits to be in the black soon,” said a spokesperson from GS Home Shopping.

GS Home Shopping’s success in China is a stark contrast against companies such as Lotte Shopping and E-mart, which have seen losses or reduced the numbers of their shops.
