British television music competition “X Factor” may be waning in terms of popularity.

On Tuesday, Colchester, Essex, saw only one participant for the show’s regional audition, according to British media.

The contestant, Cher Townrow, appeared to have entered by mere chance, as she said, “I was walking home and saw it on the sign for the auditions.”

Despite being the sole contender, she failed to capture producers’ hearts and had to head back home. “At home I can sing brilliantly, but it didn’t happen here,” the 40-year-old brunette said.

According to onlookers, it was a depressing sight, like a party with no guests. Staff members even tried persuading passersby to compete.

One of the locals said it was clear that the nationwide grip of “X Factor” was waning.

Townrow suggested that the cold weather might have been the reason for the low turnout.

“X Factor” holds regional auditions for to give locals the chance to become an overnight star. Last year, around 100 hopefuls turned up at Colchester.

An “X Factor” spokesman said the low turnout in Essex does not mean the show lost its appeal to the public. He said that the number of applicants this year was on par with that of last year except for Essex.

그녀는 결국 프로듀서들의 마음을 얻지 못하고 집으로 돌아가야 했다.

제작진은 오디션 장소 주변의 행인들에게 참가를 호소할 정도였고, 구경꾼들은 “봐주기 힘들 정도다. 이는 마치 손님 없는 파티같다”고 당시 상황을 전했다.

유일한 참가자인 셰어씨는 “아마도 날씨가 추워서 참가율이 저조한게 아니었나 생각한다”고 말했다.

X Factor는 오디션 기회를 자주 갖지 못하는 사람들을 위해 지역별로 오디션을 개최하고 있다. 하룻밤 스타가 되기를 희망하는 사람들이 매년 평균 100명씩 몰린다. 올해도 콜체스터시만 제외하고는 상당히 많은 지원자들이 몰려왔다고 제작진은 밝혔다.
