블리자드의 인기 게임 타이틀 디아블로3가 ‘마법사 무적 모드’ 버그로 인해 논란에 휩싸였다.

지난 23일 디아블로3 북미 포럼에 공개된 영상에 따르면 유저들이 마법사 캐릭터의 ‘마인’ 스킬을 특정 조건하에서 사용할 경우 체력이 닳지 않는 무적모드에 들어갈 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.

이에 국내 사용자들은 게임 포럼사이트 게시판에 ‘오래 기다렸던 게임인데 배신감마저 느껴진다’며, 이 버그 때문에 캐릭터 간의 밸런스가 심각하게 무너졌다고 불편한 심기를 드러냈다.

이들은 버그 때문에 고가의 아이템들을 너무 쉽게 손에 넣는 사람들을 보여 디아블로3가 가장 큰 재미거리인 아이템 파밍의 묘미를 잃고 있다고도 말했다.

그럼에도 불구하고 아시아 서버 내 ‘마법사 무적 모드’ 버그는 24일 오후까지도 고쳐지지 않은 것으로 코리아헤럴드에서 확인했다.

이번 버그 사태는 블리자드 코리아가 이미 잦은 서버오류와 골드 인플레이션으로 인한 게임 내 경매장 질서 붕괴 등으로 홍역을 치르는 중에 발생해 더욱 큰 타격을 주고 있다.

디아블로3는 발매 초기 PC방 점유율이 30% 대에서 최근 11%대로 크게 떨어지면서 그 사용자 수도 크게 줄었다.

Korean users of Diablo 3 feel betrayed over game glitch

Blizzard Entertainment, a U.S. game developer, is in hot water in Korea as its latest multiplayer RGP game, Diablo 3, has a bug that allows some users to exploit characters’ abilities at will.

Diablo 3 users in Asia are now able to play an "invincible wizard" character by tweaking some gaming options, a cheat that sparked uproar from local gamers.

The revelation about the bug came from a North American forum on the popular game. A user of the American server posted a video clip on the Internet, in which he plays a wizard whose defense power is unaffected by attacks from monster characters after the Archon spell is cast.

The cheat is now being called "God mode," as the wizard character cannot be defeated, thereby allowing the users to make rapid progress.

Unlike the Asian edition, Blizzard runs a real money-based auction for Diablo 3 items. As such, the introduction of the God-mode character as a result of a serious bug caused major concern among many users who have been abiding by the rules.

At many online game communities in Korea, users expressed anger. Users also complained that such a bug could undermine the balance among virtual characters, putting some users unaware of the glitch at a disadvantage.

The users also said that Diablo 3 seems to be losing its biggest attraction because other cheating users are allowed to harvest expensive items with ease.

While the American edition of the game reportedly fixed the bug overnight, Korean and other Asian users can activate the invincible Wizard character as of Tuesday afternoon, The Korea Herald confirmed.

The controversy comes as Blizzard is under fire for frequent server failures, delays and runaway inflation of virtual money.

Diablo 3 has lost a number of Korean users in recent weeks, as its once-soaring popularity rate in local Internet cafes plunged to 11 percent, compared with as high as 30 percent.
