한국과 중국, 일본 중에 영어 구사 능력이 가장 뛰어난 국가는 한국인 것으로 나타났다.

교육 전문 회사인 EF 잉글리시타운(Englishtown)이 최근에 발표한 ‘2012년 EF EPI (영어 능력 지수)’에 따르면 한국은 100점 만점에 55.3점을 기록하며 53개 국가 중 21위에 올랐다. 한국의 영어 능력 지수는 ‘보통’으로 기록되었다.

일본의 경우 한국을 바짝 따라와 55.1점으로 22위에 올랐고 중국은 36위로 중국의 영어 능력 지수는 ‘미흡’한 것으로 나타났다.

성별로 보면 한국 여성의 영어 능력 지수가 아시아에서 56.4점으로 1위에 올랐고 그 다음으로 일본 여성이 55.6점으로 2위였다.

반면, 일본 남성이 한중일 영어 능력 지수 비교에서 54.5점으로 1위였고 그 뒤를 한국 남성이 54.1점으로 뒤따랐다.

그러나 전반적으로 한국의 영어능력점수는 선진국 평균보다도 낮은 것으로 나타났다.

국제도시로 거듭나기 위해 많은 노력을 기울이고 있는 서울은 영어 능력이 도쿄와 싱가포르보다 뒤쳐졌다.

전체 글로벌 영어 능력 지수에서 1위에 오른 국가는 스웨덴으로 ‘우수’에 속하는 68.9점을 기록했다.

이번 조사는 54개국의 170만 명의 사람들을 대상으로 지난 3년간 온라인 테스트를 통해 실시되었다. EF 잉글리시타운은 이번 조사 대상은 평균 인구보다 더 젊고 도시화 된 사람들이었다고 밝혔다.

South Koreans have ‘moderate’ English-language skills

South Korea ranked 21st among 54 countries in the English proficiency index, indicating its people’s English-language skills are “moderate,” a global survey showed.

EF Englishtown, an education company, released its second survey for the year 2012, which asked 1.7 m people over three years in 54 countries to take a free online test.

Most of the respondents were more urban and younger than the general population, the survey noted.

English proficiency was graded on five levels -- very high, high, moderate, low and very low.

Sweden topped the list with a 68.9 score out of 100, followed by Denmark with 67.9 and the Netherlands with 66.3.

South Korea scored 55.3, closely trailed by Japan with 55.1.

By gender, South Korean females scored the highest, 56.4, among their counterparts in Japan, China and the rest of Asia, while Japanese males scored the highest with 54.5, followed by South Korean men with 54.1 and Chinese men with 47.5.
