Italy on Saturday said it had found its first case of horsemeat contamination in a batch of frozen lasagne produced in the region around the city of Bologna where the famous Italian dish originated.

The health ministry said horse DNA was found in tests on six tons of mincemeat and 2,400 packages labeled as "lasagne bolognese" -- literally "from Bologna" -- that were seized from the company.

"There was a positive test for horsemeat, which was not declared on the label," the ministry said.

The package in which the horsemeat was found had been on a supermarket shelf in Brescia in northern Italy.

The ministry identified the company as "Primia" and said it had used meat from another company in Brescia and originally supplied by two other companies, also based there.

More checks are under way at the original suppliers.

The tests were carried out as part of sweeping checks by police on 121 brands across the country.

Officials earlier said they had found no horsemeat in batches seized from Swiss food giant Nestle.

The head of the company where the horsemeat was found told the Italian news agency ANSA he had bought it believing it was beef.

"We gave all the documents to the police," the executive, who was not named, was quoted as saying.

"On Tuesday there will be more checks. If they confirm that it is horsemeat, we will complain to our suppliers," he said. (AFP)

냉동 라자냐에 말고기 DNA 검출

이탈리아 볼로냐 인근 지역에서 생산된 냉동 라자냐에서 말고기 혼용 사례가 처음 나타났다.

이탈리아 보건부는 육가공 식재료 민스미트 6t 분량과 '볼로냐 라자냐'로 표기된 가공식품 2천400개를 수거해 검사한 결과 일부에서 말 DNA가 검출됐다고 23일(현지시간) 밝혔다.

보건부는 "검사 결과 말고기가 들어 있었지만 포장에는 말고기 사용 사실이 표기되지 않았다"고 설명했다.

볼로냐는 이 지역 이름을 딴 파스타 요리로 유명하다.

보건부 발표에 따르면 말고기 함유 포장 식품은 이탈리아 북부 브레시아의 한 슈퍼마켓에서 발견된 프리미아(Primia)사 제품이었고, 이 회사는 브레시아에 있는 다른 식재료 공급업체로부터 구입한 고기를 사용했다.

프리미아에 고기를 공급한 식재료 업체 역시 같은 지역의 다른 2개 업체로부터 육류를 공급받았다.

이번 조사 결과는 이탈리아 전역에서 121개 상표로 판매되는 육가공식품에 말고 기가 함유됐는지를 전면 조사하는 과정에서 나왔다.

이에 앞서 이탈리아 관리들은 자국 내에서 판매되던 스위스 네슬레사(社)의 육가공식품 중에서는 말고기가 발견되지 않았다고 밝혔다.

현행 유럽연합(EU) 규정에는 가공식품에 어떤 육류를 사용했는지 표시해야 한다 는 규정이 있지만 사용된 육류의 원산지 표시 규정은 없다.

이와 관련해 프랑스에서는 가공식품에 쓰는 고기에 대해서도 엄격한 원산지 표기 규정을 적용하려는 움직임이 나오고 있다.

프랑수아 올랑드 프랑스 대통령은 이날 프랑스 농업회의소 연설에서 "표기(규정 )가 없었기 때문에" 말고기를 섞어 쓰는 부정행위가 가능했다며 "소비자는 구입한 식품, 특히 육류의 원산지를 알 권리가 있다"고 강조했다.

전날 스테판 르 폴 프랑스 농업장관은 가축용 진통소염제 페닐부타존이 사용된 말고기가 프랑스의 식품 유통망으로 유입됐을 가능성이 있다고 확인했다.

르 폴 장관은 유통량이 미미해 인체에는 무해한 수준이라고 밝혔다. 그러나 보건 전문가들은 말고기 파동이 인체 유해성 여부로 커질 가능성에 촉각을 곤두세우고 있다.
