A British man overly enthusiastic about the 2012 London Olympic Games recently attempted to swim across the Atlantic Ocean before being rescued by lifeguards, local media reported Sunday.

The 34-year-old unidentified man, enjoying a holiday at a beach in Biarritz, Southern France boldly declared to his friends that he would deliver the "Olympic spirit" to New York by swimming there.

The man swam until he was well out of sight of his friends watching in concern, embarking on what he hoped to be an epic 5,784-kilometer journey.

However, he was halted by lifeguards who advised him against the trip.

While the man expressed confidence that he was up to the challenge, lifeguards threw him a line and towed him back to the beach.

신원이 밝혀지지 않은 이 34세 남성은 남부 프랑스 비아리츠에 위치한 해변가에서 휴가를 즐기다가 난데없이 친구들에게 ‘올림픽 정신’을 미국으로 가져가겠다며 뉴욕까지 수영해 가겠노라고 선언했다.

그의 친구들은 처음엔 이 말이 농담인 줄 알았지만 평상시 수영실력이 뛰어난 그가 진심으로 하는 말임을 깨닫고 해양구조대를 대기시켜놓겠다는 조건 하에 그의 ‘도전’을 허락했다.

남성은 뉴욕까지 5,784 킬로미터에 달하는 여정을 시작해, 해변가에서 그의 모습이 보이지 않게 될 때까지 수영해갔다.

그러나 곧 헬리콥터를 탄 해양구조대가 등장해 계속 수영하는 것은 좋은 생각이 아니다라고 조언했다. 남성은 ‘충분히 해낼 수 있다’라고 주장했지만 결국 구조대가 내민 줄을 잡고 해변으로 돌아갔다.

비아리츠 공군 기지의 장교 로랑 생테스페는 “그 남성은 좀 순진했지만, 런던에서 올림픽이 올리는 시기니 재미있는 일들이 일어나기 마련이다”라고 말했다.
