A 15-year-old British girl has run away to France with a married teacher, according to local news reports.

Megan Stammers of Sussex is believed to have crossed the English channel on Friday with her math teacher Jeremy Forrest, who allegedly spent months persuading her via Facebook to come with him.

Megan was first reported missing early Friday when she failed to arrive at school, as was Forrest. CCTV footage from later that evening showed the pair boarding a ferry bound for Calais, France.

The girl’s family said in an interview with local newspaper that they “just want her to return safely.”

“The whole family has been rallying together and we’ve been working closely with the police. We just want her home safe,” said her father Martin Stammers.

An unnamed neighbor, however, testified that Stammers’ family had domestic disputes that often resulted in angry outbursts from the father.

Further investigation revealed that Forrest and his wife were also prone to aggravated arguments.

“Sometimes their rows were so intense I phoned the police,” said an unnamed neighbor of the couple.

“I’d worry for that schoolgirl’s (Megan) safety if I was her mother…From their rows, I’d say he didn’t sound like the kind of person you’d want near your child.”

British and French police launched a joint investigation to look for the pair.

“We have previously circulated the details of Megan, Jeremy Forrest and the vehicle we believe they are in,” chief inspector Jason Tingley of Sussex police said.

한편 메건은 사건이 발생하기 4일전에 온라인 커뮤니티에서 “미래에 대해 어떻게 느끼고 있냐”라는 질문을 받았는데, 이에 대해 “앞으로 무슨 일을 겪을지 알기 때문에 흥분된다”라고 답변했다.

메건의 가족은 현지 신문과의 인터뷰에서 “아이가 무사히 오기만 했으면 좋겠다”고 밝혔다.

“가족 전부가 함께 모여서 경찰에 협력하고 있습니다. 그저 그녀가 집에 무사히 오기만을 바랄 뿐입니다”라고 메건의 아버지 마틴 스테머스는 말했다.

그러나 스테머스 부부가 종종 큰 소리로 싸웠다는 이웃의 증언이 나옴에 따라, 일각에서는 집안 불화로 인해 메건이 가출했을지도 모른다는 추정도 나오고 있다.

또한 포레스트와 그의 아내 역시 불화를 겪었다고 하는데, 익명을 요구한 한 이웃은 “그들의 다툼이 너무 심해서 경찰을 부른 적도 있다”라고 말했다.

“내가 (메건의) 부모라면 걱정이 많이 될 것 같습니다. 다투는 소리를 듣고 판단해보면 (포레스트는) 아이 곁에 두고 싶은 사람일 것 같지 않습니다.”라고 그는 말했다.

영국 경찰은 이 두 사람을 찾기 위한 프랑스 경찰과 함께 합동수사를 펼치고 있다고 밝혔다.
