WASHINGTON (AP) _ Mitt Romney has won the Republican presidential primaries in Massachusetts, Vermont and Virginia. Newt Gingrich has won in his home state of Georgia.
Voters across 10 states are choosing among the Republican candidates on Super Tuesday. Romney and Rick Santorum are in a close contest in the industrial state of Ohio as early returns come in.
More than 400 delegates were at stake on the busiest day by far of the race to pick an opponent to President Barack Obama in the November election.
Gingrich's victory was his first since he won the South Carolina primary on Jan. 21.
Romney easily won in Virginia where both Gingrich and Santorum failed to qualify for the ballot. He also did well in Massachusetts, where he served as governor, and in another northeastern state, Vermont.
