[Today’s K-pop] BTS logs 1.4b views with ‘Mic Drop’ remix video

The music video for BTS’ 2017 hit song “Mic Drop (Steve Aoki Remix)” surpassed 1.4 billion views on YouTube on Friday, said label Big Hit Music.

It is the band’s 14th music video to hit the milestone, following those of “Dynamite,” “Boy With Luv (feat. Halsey)” and “DNA.”

“Mic Drop” is from its fifth EP “LOVE YOURSELF 承 ‘Her’” and DJ Steve Aoki spun it into an electro trap number which topped iTunes top songs in 60 regions. The remix entered Billboard’s Hot 100 at No. 28 and stayed on the chart for 10 weeks straight.

Meanwhile, the band was nominated for the “Best Fan Army” award by the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Award. The septet has won the category all six times since it was introduced in 2018.

 

GOT7’s Bambam cancels solo US tour due to injury

Bambam of GOT7 decided to cancel the American leg of his first solo tour due to an ankle injury, said agency Abyss Company on Friday.

He has had high expectations for the live show, preparing to drop a new song in the country, but the injury worsened while practicing for the tour, the company explained. He was set to go live in six cities in the US from Feb. 10-24 for tour “Area 52.”

The performer apologized to fans via his own SNS channel saying: “I am sorry I couldn’t look after myself well enough.”

Bambam visited fans in Asia last year, starting in Seoul in September before heading over to the Philippines, Macao, Vietnam, Malaysia, Japan and Thailand.

 

NewJeans tops 200m Spotify streams with ‘Cookie’

NewJeans amassed 200 million plays on Spotify with “Cookie,” according to agency Ador on Friday.

It is the sixth song from the rookie girl group to reach the milestone.

“Cookie” is one of the three main tracks from its eponymous debut EP that came out in August 2022. It was one of the “Best Songs of 2022” listed by the New York Times which said the most striking about the song “is its ease – no maximalism, no theater.”

The five-member act has garnered over 3.5 billion streams on the platform so far.

Separately, it will be awarded Group of the Year” by 2023 Billboard Women In Music, a first for a K-pop girl group. The award ceremony will be held in California on March 6 in the US.

 

Itzy announces plans for 2nd world tour

Itzy unveiled plans for its second international tour through label JYP Entertainment on Friday.

The group will kick off the tour with a two-day concert in Seoul slated for Feb. 24-25. It will resume the tour in mid-March in Bangkok, Thailand, and will visit New Zealand and Australia for its first standalone gig in the region. After going live in Mexico and Chile the following month, it will hopefully be around Europe until early May.

The tour will span 27 cities for 29 live shows and will bring the four members to Europe and Latin America for the first time on their own as well. Lia will be absent due to health reasons.

The tour is named after the group’s eighth EP “Born To Be” which came out earlier this month and topped the iTunes top albums chart in 23 regions.
