Flying 'shark’ stuns pilot

A remote-controlled helium-filled shark toy stunned an airborne pilot in New Zealand, NZ Newswire reported.

The passenger jet was on its descent about 9 kilometers from Christchurch International Airport on Dec. 26 when the pilot encountered the “rogue shark” and radioed ground control.

It was identified as a 1.44-metre-long Air Swimmer, a popular Christmas gift.
Designed for indoor use, the $99 shark can be operated by remote control over a range of 15 meters.

Air traffic was alerted to the shark but no one else reported seeing it, Airways spokeswoman Monica Davis was quoted as saying.

Glen Kenny, president of New Zealand Air Line Pilots' Association, said the biggest risk the shark posed was startling the pilot.

It would probably not stop a jet engine if it was sucked into it but could do some damage, he said.

'하늘 나는 상어' 에 조종사 혼쭐

뉴질랜드에서 민간 여객기를 조종하고 있던 조종사가 수천 피트 상공을 나는 `상어'에 놀라 공항 관제탑에 신고하는 일이 벌어졌다.

지난 12월 26일 크라이스트처치 공항에 착륙하기 위해 항공기를 하강시키고 있던 이 여객기 조종사는 공항에서 9km 정도 떨어진 지점 상공을 나는 상어 장난감을 보고는 놀라서 공항 관제탑에 무선으로 신고했다.

이 상어는 헬륨을 채워 리모컨으로 조종하는 장난감으로 지난 크리스마스 때 인기 있는 선물들 가운데 하나였다.

가격 99달러에 길이 1.44m인 이 상어는 원래 실내에서 사용하도록 만들어져 있 으나 리모컨으로 지상에서 15m 상공까지 띄워 올릴 수 있는데 어떻게 하다 이 상어는 수천 피트 상공까지 올라가게 됐는지 알려지지 않고 있다.

공항 대변인은 당시 항공 교통에 비상이 걸렸으나 다른 조종사들이 그 상어를 다시 목격했다는 신고는 없었다고 말했다.
