New York zoo employees called upon their first aid training Friday as they helped to deliver a baby on a wildlife exhibit path -- a human baby, this time.

Zoo Education Coordinator Liz Schmidt said she was teaching about reindeer to preschool children and their parents at Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse when she received a call about a woman, 21, in labor approximately 500 yards away near the bear exhibit, the Syracuse (N.Y.) Post-Standard reported. “I honestly didn‘t expect her to deliver at the zoo. I thought we’d pop her in a wheelchair and she‘d be good to go to the hospital,” said Schmidt, who, realized when she arrived on the scene that the baby wasn’t going to wait that long.

Schmidt immediately radioed for blankets and back-up personnel.

“As I came on the scene, the baby was pretty much on its way out,” said Zookeeper Sarah Kohler, the next employee to arrive at the birthing scene.

Kohler said the baby girl at first did not cry and she was intent on making sure the baby was breathing.

The woman was taken by ambulance to the hospital, the newspaper reported.

Zoo Director Ted Fox said the zoo intends to send a baby gift to the family. “I‘m sure it will be animal related,” he said.

“There certainly has been a bumper crop at the zoo for babies. It’s following suit with the human species,” he said. (UPI)

"솔직히 동물원에서 출산하리라고는 생각을 못했어요. 휠체어에 태워서 병원으로 데려가는 것이 좋을 거라 생각했죠."라고 슈미트가 말했다. 그러나 슈미트는 현장에 도착하자 상황이 매우 긴박해 그럴 시간조차 없다는 것을 깨달았다.

슈미트는 곧바로 무전으로 담요를 줄 것을 부탁하고 사람을 보내달라고 전했다.

"제가 도착했을 때 아기는 이미 상당히 나온 상태였어요."라고 동물원관리자 새라 콜러(Sarah Kohler)가 말했다. 슈미트에 이어 두 번째로 도착한 직원이었다.

콜러는 여자아이가 태어났고 처음에는 울지 않았다고 말했다. 그녀는 아기가 숨을 쉬고 있는지 살펴보았다.

여성은 구급차로 병원에 이송되었다.

동물원의 책임자인 테드 폭스(Ted Fox)는 여성의 가족에게 아기를 선물로 줄 것이라며 "뭔가 동물과 관련이 있기는 하지요?"라고 말했다.
