Presidential candidates Park Geun-hye and Moon Jae-in presented on Wednesday their different views on whether the “game shutdown system” should also be applied to mobile games.

The system, introduced by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, prohibits gamers aged 16 or under from connecting to online games between midnight and 6 a.m. The regulation came into effect on Nov. 20 last year.

According to the website of Citizen’s Coalition for Economic Justice, Saenuri Party presidential candidate Park said she agreed with the proposal that the regulation should also cover mobile games to better protect minors from game addiction, whereas Democratic United Party candidate Moon Jae-in was less forthcoming, saying that matter should be approached with more prudence.

Park said the system should be expanded to mobile games for greater effectiveness. She also emphasized the importance of a more instructive and caring attitude from parents to provide better recreational activities for their children.

On the other hand, Moon said the system had several side effects such as a negative impact on related businesses. He added that more ideas from the gaming industry, civic organizations and parents should be gathered thoroughly before deciding whether to expand the system.

박근혜, "게임 셧다운제 확장해야 돼"


새누리당 박근혜 대통령 후보와 문재인 후보가 지난 수요일 게임 셧다운제를 모바일 게임에 까지 확장해서 적용할 것인가에 대해 서로 다른 견해를 드러냈다.

여성가족부가 도입한 게임 셧다운제는 16세 이하 청소년들의 게임 중독 예방을 위해 자정부터 오전 6시 사이에 온라인 게임에 접속할 수 없도록 차단하는 제도로써 작년 11월 20일부터 시행돼왔다.

경제정의실천시민연합(이하 경실련) 웹사이트에 따르면 새누리당 박근혜 후보는 게임 셧다운제가 청소년들의 게임 중독 예방을 위해 모바일 게임으로까지 확장 적용되어야 한다고 한 반면, 민주통합당 문재인 후보는 보다 신중을 기해야 할 문제라며 말을 아꼈다.

박 후보는 셧다운제의 효율성을 보다 향상시키기 위해 모바일 게임에 대한 확장 적용이 꼭 필요하다고 밝혔다. 박 후모는 또한 자녀들에게 보다 나은 여가활동을 제공하기 위한 부모들의 가르침이 중요함을 강조했다.

반면 문 후보는 현행 셧다운제가 관련 산업 위축과 같은 부작용을 여럿 수반하고 있다고 지적했다. 그는 또한 관련 업계, 사회 단체 및 학부모들로부터 더욱 다양한 의견을 수렴하는 것이 선행되어야 한다고 주장했다. (윤성원 인턴기자 / 코리아헤럴드)
