An Atlanta non-profit said it will paint over a controversial public mural of a woman in various states of undress.

Nathan Bolster, executive director of operations for the non-profit Living Walls Conference, said the group commissioned the concrete wall mural from Spanish artist Hyuro and the work was completed about two weeks ago, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported Thursday.

However, Bolster said the property owner, Sawtell Development Partners, ordered the mural painted over after local residents objected to the artwork and the mural was defaced by someone who used tape to cover up the painting's "sensitive areas."

"(The media) had a knee-jerk reaction to a couple of negative voices," Bolster said.

The effort to have the mural removed was led  by Tajiddin Muwwakkil, the imam at the neighboring Masjid al-Quaran, who called the mural "pornographic and offensive." (UPI)

미국사회에 예술이냐, 외설이냐라는 해묵은 논란을 낳은 애틀랜타의 누드 벽화가 결국 짧은 생을 마감하게 됐다고 30일 애 틀랜타저널(AJC)이 보도했다.

스페인 화가 휴로가 애틀랜타 빈민가의 한 무너진 콘크리트 건물 벽에 중년 여성이 천천히 옷을 벗어 전라가 되는 모습을 그려넣은 지 한 달도 안 돼 강제 철거 결정이 내려진 것이다.

문제의 벽화는 주로 빈민가에 버려진 건물 벽에 그림을 그리는 활동을 펼치는 한 자선단체 주도로 만들어진 것으로, 보름 전 그림이 완성되자마자 동네 주민 일부가 철거를 요구하고 나서 논란이 일었다.

이들은 "포르노 그림"과 가까운 거리에 어린이집과 교회가 있어 교육과 종교활동에 방해가 된다고 불만을 터트렸고 최근에는 누군가가 그림의 음부를 검정 테이프로 가리는 웃지 못할 소동도 빚어졌다.

예술계는 물론이고 상당수 시민은 애틀랜타의 낡은 시멘트벽에서 새로운 명소가 탄생했다고 반기며 그림 보존을 외쳤지만 여성들이 중심이 된 주민 반발에 맞서기엔 역부족이었다.

애틀랜타 시는 내달 1일 회색 페인트로 그림을 지울 예정이다.
