숙어 표현 하나와 자주쓰이는 고급영단어 공부

유튜브를 보면서 공부하는 분들도 많다. 각자에게 유익한 정보를 찾아서 선택하여 집중하면 올해 좋은 성과가 있을 것이다. 필자가 최근 발견한 유익한 유튜브 채널은 @AccurateEnglish 이다. 독일, 뉴질랜드 중국에서 영어를 가르친 경험이 있고 외국인으로 Hollywood 영화에 출연하는 배우들을 집중적으로 관리하는 경험이 있는 여자 교수가 운영하는 곳인데 이미 구독자가 160만이 넘는 곳이다. 발음이나 고급영어공부에 유익하니 참고해 보시기 바란다.

오늘은 영어 idiom 하나와 실용영단어 중에 중고급 수준의 단어들로 준비했다.

Go cold turkey 는 어떤 의미일까?

cold turkey는 자신이 의존하던 담배나 (마)약을 끊은 직후에 사람이 겪는 큰 고통의 기간(the period of extreme suffering that comes immediately after a person has stopped taking a drug on which they depend)을 의미한다.

(ex) Six years ago Kris went cold turkey on (= stopped completely) a three-pack-a-day smoking habit.(6년 전에 Kris는 하루 3갑씩 피우던 담배를 완전히 끊었다)

cold turkey는 갑자기 완전하게(suddenly and completely)라는 의미의 부사처럼 쓰이기도 한다.

(ex) Darren decided to stop drinking coffee and quit cold turkey.(Darren은 커피를 안마시기로 결심하고 정말 완전하게 끊었다.)

자주 쓰이는 고급영단어 공부

1. conform to(기준이나 규칙을 따르다) 비슷한 의미의 표현은 comply with

(ex) The lamp has been designed to conform to British safety requirements. (그 램프는 영국 안전요건을 따르도록 만들어졌다)

2. consistent with (일치하다, 모순되지 않다)

(ex) This result is consistent with the findings of Margaret and Mina.(이 결과는 마가렛과 미나의 연구 결과와 일치한다)

consistent with와 비슷한 표현들: in harmony with, in accord with, in agreement with, in keeping with

주의! ‘consist of~로 구성되다’와 전치사도 다르고 의미도 다르다.

3. integral (필수적인, 핵심적인)

(ex) Rituals and festivals form an integral part of every human society.(의식과 축제가 모든 인간사회의 핵심적인 부분이다)

Integral과 비슷한 의미의 단어들: essential, basic, fundamental, necessary

4. vulnerable (취약한, 상처받기 쉬운)

(ex) People with high blood pressure are especially vulnerable to diabetes.(고혈압이 있는 사람들은 특히 당뇨에 약하다)

〈be vulnerable to +명사〉와 비슷한 표현: be susceptible to +명사(취약한)

vulnerable의 비슷한 의미의 단어들: : exposed, open, unprotected, defenceless

5. discretion(재량, 신중함)

(ex) This committee may want to exercise its discretion to look into those charges.(이 위원회는 재량것 그 혐의들을 조사하고 싶어할 지도 모른다)

6. deteriorate(악화되다[=become worse])

(ex) The weather conditions are deteriorating.(기상 조건이 악화되고 있다)

7. plummet(급락하다[decreases quickly by a large amount])

(ex) In Tokyo share prices have plummeted for the sixth successive day.(도쿄에 주가가 6개월 연속하여 급락했다)

8. lucrative(이익이 되는)

(ex) Thousands of ex-army officers have found lucrative jobs in private security firms.(수천명의 제대한 장교들이 개인 보안업체에서 수익이 높은 직업을 발견했다)

lucrative와 비슷한 의미의 단어들: profitable, rewarding, productive, fruitful

9. skeptical(회의주의적인)

a skeptical young woman(회의주의적인 젊은 여성)

skeptical about the possibility(가능성에 대해 의심하는)

10. stranded (오도가도 못하고 힘없이 남겨진[left helpless])

(ex) Hundreds of people remain stranded at railway stations.(수백명의 사람들이 철도역에서 오도가도 못하고 있다)

11. refute(반박하다)

(ex) It was the kind of rumour that it is impossible to refute.(그것은 반박하기 불가능한 종류의 소문이었다)

12. liaison(연계, 연락책)

(ex) The courses are designed by universities in liaison with employers.(그 교과 과정은 대학이 고용주들과 연계하여 만들었다)

liaison과 비슷한 의미의 단어들: contact, communication, connection, interchange

13. objectionable(혐오스러운, 짜중나는, 싫은)

(ex) I don't like your tone, in fact I find it highly objectionable.(나는 당신의 어조가 마음에 안든다. 사실 그 어조가 너무나 짜중난다)

objectionable 과 비슷한 의미의 단어들: offensive, annoying, irritating, unacceptable

14. forge(공들여 만들다)

(ex) They agreed to forge closer economic ties.(그들은 보다 더 긴밀한 경제적인 유대감을 만드는데 동의했다)

비슷한 의미의 단어들: form, build, create, establish

cf. forge는 ‘위조하다’의 의미도 있다.

(ex) He admitted seven charges including forging passports.(그는 여권위조를 포함한 7가지 혐의를 인정했다)

15. deliberation(심사숙고)

(ex) After much deliberation, a decision was reached.(많은 심사숙고 끝에 결정이 되었다)
