일본의 1등 영어 유튜버가 한국 영어 학습자들에게 드리는 글

일본은 가깝고도 먼 나라고들 말한다. 필자의 개인적인 체험으로는 영어 공부를 정성을 다해 열심히 하는 일본 선생님들도 적지 않고 상호 교류하면서 자극을 받는 점도 있어서 긍정적인 면이 많다. 필자의 토익 책이 일본에 수출되어 베스트셀러가 된 것을 계기로 사귄 친구들도 있고 그런 분들 중에 일본의 도쿄대 출신 선생님들도 계시다. 오늘 소개할 친구는 도쿄대학을 나온 일본의 토익부분 1등 유튜버 Tetsuya Morita 선생님이다. 한국 방문할 때 두 번, 일본방문 때 두 번 정도 만나본 분으로 영어, 한국어, 중국어도 잘하는 분이다. 필자가 만나본 일본 선생님들 중에 새로운 시도도 많이 하는 머리 좋은 분으로 현재 일본 1등 토익 유튜버이다. Korea Herald에 실릴만한 글을 써달라고 부탁했다. 일본사람들이 영어공부를 할 때 유튜브나 영상을 활용하는 법과 트랜드를 볼 수 있는 글이다. Tetsuya Morita 선생님은 Korea Herald도 꾸준히 읽은 분이다.

My name is Tetsuya Morita. I am a YouTuber from Morite2 English Channel. I usually talk about test taking strategies for university entrance examinations in Japan as well as English tests such as TOEIC Listening and Reading. I have received a 990 (perfect score) on the TOEIC 98 times so far. I even took the test while I was studying abroad in Korea. As a TOEIC lover, I will discuss how Japanese people utilize YouTube to learn about TOEIC.

In Japan, there are currently approximately 80 YouTube channels focusing on English learning, which appear on a website showing YouTube channel ranking (most likely, many more exist).   Almost all of them have posted some videos regarding TOEIC, which is important for large populations just like Korea. TOEIC L&R exams are held once a month in Japan. On the days leading up to as well as on the day of the exam, a great number of individuals search for information concerning TOEIC. In fact, the search word “TOEIC” ranks number 1 in the education category on the day when the test is conducted and when the results are announced.

(일본에는 현재 영어 학습에 중점을 둔 약 80개의 YouTube 채널이 있으며, 이 채널은 YouTube 채널 순위를 보여주는 웹사이트에 표시됩니다(더 많을 가능성이 높긴 하죠). 거의 모든 유튜버들이 한국에서처럼 일본에서도 많은 사람들에게 중요한 토익에 관한 비디오를 게시해오고 있습니다. There are several types of information that people would like to access regarding TOEIC via YouTube. The first one is how to study TOEIC: what textbooks they should use, in what order and how they should study them, and so forth. In addition, right before the exam, a lot of test takers attempt to know how to spend their time and what to do prior to it. Test taking strategies are also quite popular since that sort of knowledge is indispensable to acquire their aimed score.

(사람들이 YouTube를 통해 TOEIC에 대해 접근해 알고 싶어하는 몇 가지 유형의 정보가 있습니다. 첫 번째는 TOEIC을 어떻게 공부해야 하는지, 어떤 교재를 사용해야 하는지, 어떤 순서로 어떻게 공부해야 하는지 등입니다. 또한 시험 직전에는 많은 응시자들은 시간을 어떻게 보낼지, 시험 전에 무엇을 해야 하는지 알아보려고 합니다. 시험 응시 전략도 꽤 인기가 높은데 그 이유는 이런 종류의 지식이 목표 점수를 얻기 위해 필수 불가결하기 때문입니다.)

Furthermore, people watch YouTube videos in regard to TOEIC not merely for their studies but for other reasons as well. One noticeably popular type of video is discussing how they felt after taking the test. This appeals to many exam takers who felt TOEIC was difficult. Usually, they feel relieved when hearing YouTubers say it was challenging (because TOEIC really is!), They post comments and share their feelings with others. Some of them really love this!

(또한 사람들은 공부를 위해서 뿐 아니라 다른 이유로도 TOEIC 관련 YouTube 동영상을 시청합니다. 눈에 띄게 인기 있는 비디오 유형 중 하나는 시험을 본 후 느낀 점에 대해 이야기하는 것입니다. 이것은 TOEIC이 어렵다고 느끼는 많은 응시자들에게 어필합니다. 보통 유튜버들이 (실제 어렵기 때문에) 이번 토익 시험이 어려웠다고 하는 말을 시청자들이 들으면 안심을 합니다. 시청자들은 댓글을 달고 감정을 서로 나눕니다. 시험 응시자들 중 일부는 이것을 정말 좋아합니다!)

Another type of video in demand is showing TOEIC scores. Seeing people’s test results are always exciting for many Japanese people. In my case, many viewers are eager to know whether I have obtained TOEIC 990 again or not. Not only do they enjoy watching the results, but they are also motivated by seeing the results of others.

That is how Japanese people watch YouTube videos related to TOEIC. Is the situation the same, somewhat similar, or completely different in Korea?
