Actor Jang Keun-suk to create charity foundation

Jan. 7, 2016 - 18:37 By KH디지털2

South Korean actor Jang Keun-suk said Thursday he will create a foundation to take his philanthropic activities a step further this year.

Jang has donated generously to the victims of the 2011 Fukushima earthquake in Japan and the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

He has also contributed 1.2 billion won ($1 million) to his alma mater Hanyang University in Seoul and has regularly volunteered at a Seoul orphanage with his fans for years.

Jang said the charity foundation he'd been planning for half a decade will "systematize and expand" his sharing.

"This year, which is when I turn 30 in Korean age, seemed like the right time to carry out the plan," he told Yonhap News Agency in an interview.

Meanwhile, Jang continued to deny reports of his alleged tax evasion that emerged last year.

"It hurt to watch rumors surface and become distorted, but I was able to put it behind me thanks to my trusting fans," he said.

"I've never violated a law and earned my money through hard efforts. I'll continue to share what I've earned in that manner."

Last year, Jang gave lectures on philanthropy at Hanyang University where he was named one of six "philanthropy professors" in October 2015.

The foundation will allow him to "supply blankets to typhoon victims, build schools where they are needed, help financially struggling entertainers," he said.

"I've received such positive energy from sharing and it's my dream to keep on sharing," he said. (Yonhap)
