The now infamous incident has made national headlines and Elizabeth Lee's political opponents aren't entirely sympathetic. “I've not been tempted to flip the bird, but I’ve certainly had my share of frustrations in press conferences.” “it's not something I think the Canberra community would expect to see from someone leading a major political party.” “Over the course of a campaign you learn a lot about how individuals respond to immense pressure - the Canberra liberals’ leader would be quite frustrated given everything that has gone wrong in their campaign.” “I think for Canberrans I would hope that they don't see literally a second in terms of where I’ve said 'yes, I let an emotional reaction get the better of me' and judge me based on that.” Ms. lee puts the incident down to frustration with a journalist.
