1. [Weekender] The truth about biodegradable plastics

[1] Typically made from natural materials such as corn starch, biodegradable plastic is designed to break down naturally when it goes to landfills.

[2] However, these efforts – and extra expenses -- might be in vain, as most of these products are incinerated after they are thrown away. Even if they end up in landfills, it is likely that they don’t break down as promised, since none of the landfills in South Korea provides conditions suitable for them to biodegrade.

*be in vain: 보람이 없다, 헛되이

[3] In Korea, the word “biodegradable” can be used for plastic that decomposes at a special, high-temperature environment in a lab -- meaning a reduction of substance of more than 90 percent in six months at a temperature between 56 degrees Celsius and 60 degrees Celsius. But there is no landfill in Korea that provides these temperatures.

*decompose: 부패되다
*reduction: 축소, 줄어들다

2. [From the scene] Fans line up for BTS Meal at McDonald’s in South Korea

[1] Under a light drizzle on Thursday morning, a group of young people stood outside a McDonald’s in Sinchon, Seoul, waiting in line.

Clad in her green BTS sweatshirt, Toni, an exchange student from India, introduced herself as a member of the Army -- the K-pop septet’s fandom community. With her two friends, also part of the BTS Army, she planned to come back for the same meal for dinner that day or for breakfast the next day.

*drizzle: 가랑비
*clad: ~(옷)을 입은
*septet: 7중주단

[2] The collaboration campaign/ is part of McDonald’s Famous Orders program, /which the burger chain introduced in September /to reinvigorate its classic menu items /by linking them with celebrities.

[3] While neither McDonald’s nor Hybe, the K-pop powerhouse behind BTS, responded to requests for comment over their contract, their joint project is likely to yield a handsome profit for both parties.

According Forbes, McDonald’s reportedly paid Scott $5 million (5.58 billion won) for the endorsement and another $15 million for merch sales.

*yield: 산출, 생산하다
*handsome profit: 많은 수익
*endorsement: 홍보
*merch: 상품, 굿즈
