Speed skater Lee Sang-hwa to soon resume training in Calgary
Two-time Olympic speed skating champion Lee Sang-hwa will soon resume training in Canada to wrap up what has been a successful season, her agency said Wednesday.
Lee, world record holder in the women's 500 meters at 36.36 seconds, returned to South Korea on Tuesday after competing in four International Skating Union Speed Skating World Cup races. An official from the Brion Company in Seoul said Lee will rest up at home for a few days before departing for Calgary in early January to continue her training.
The official added that Lee has already set her sights on the 2018 Winter Olympics on home ice, in PyeongChang, Gangwon Province.
Lee, 26, won the 500m gold medals at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics, and will try to become only the second skater ever to win three straight Olympic titles. Bonnie Blair of the United States captured three consecutive gold medals in 1988, 1992 and 1994. She only had a two-year gap between the Albertville Games and the Lillehammer Games for her last two titles, while Lee will face her second four-year interval between Sochi last year and PyeongChang in 2018.
After her second Olympic gold last year, Lee had battled nagging knee pains. She has remained healthy so far this season and has erased lingering doubts about her ability to compete at a high level with a strong World Cup showing.
In the current World Cup season, Lee has won four out of the eight 500m races and has finished second twice. She leads all female skaters in the 500m with 680 World Cup points, 120 ahead of Heather Richardson of the United States. Lee told reporters Tuesday she was satisfied with how her season had gone and her results had exceeded her own expectations.
The next World Cup stop will be Stavanger, Norway, during the final weekend of January, but Lee will most likely skip it to prepare for the World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships from Feb. 11 to 14 in Kolomna, Russia.
The official from Brion Company said Lee will be selective about her races since she hopes to stay fresh for the long run. (Yonhap)
